‘Guitar Stories: On Fender’ caps BGSU popular culture conference

BOWLING GREEN, O.—Highlighting the inaugural Ray Browne Conference on Popular Culture at Bowling Green State University this weekend will be a free performance and lecture by Dr. Matthew Donahue, an instructor in the popular culture department.

“Guitar Stories: On Fender” will feature Donahue on the iconic Fender electric guitar playing selections from his recent “MAD 45” project. His lecture addresses the electric guitar in popular culture as well as the Fender brand guitar. A longtime northwest Ohio musician and artist, Donahue is an alumnus of BGSU’s American Culture Studies Program.

His lecture/performance at 5:45 p.m. Sunday (April 1) in 201 Bowen-Thompson Student Union closes the two-day conference. All events are free and open to the public.

The Popular Culture Scholars Association is hosting the conference on “Popular Culture in the 21st Century” in 201 Union Saturday and Sunday (March 31 and April 1), bringing together scholars and students from around the country who are engaged in the study of popular culture. 

Browne, who died in 2010, was the world-renowned founder of the academic discipline of popular culture. He taught at BGSU from 1967-92.
