Perfecting the Pump Operator - 3-Day Class

October 7-9, 2025
8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Description

"A case could be made that the pump operator is the most important role in the first few minutes of an incident. The saying, “So goes the first line; so goes the incident,” starts with the pump operator. This course dissects this critical position, identifying what makes a truly effective operator and ensuring fireground success begins with proper water delivery.

In this three day course that combines classroom and hands-on training, students will develop the skills, knowledge, and situational awareness required to excel as a pump operator. Through practical evolutions, participants will gain experience in pumping multiple lines, managing large water operations, and maximizing efficiency under pressure. The course goes beyond just how to operate the pump—it emphasizes the when and, most importantly, the why behind every decision.

Key Topics Include:

· Fundamentals of Pump Operations – Understanding hydraulics, pressure management, and apparatus capabilities.

· Initial Incident Priorities – Establishing and maintaining water supply to support fire attack.

· Multiple Line Operations – Balancing supply and demand for handlines, master streams, and standpipes.

· Big Water Tactics – Effectively deploying large flows for commercial fires and defensive operations.

· Troubleshooting & Problem-Solving – Overcoming common challenges, from supply issues to pump failures.

· Situational Awareness & Command Partnership – Anticipating needs and communicating effectively with crews.

By the end of this course, students will leave with the confidence and competence to perform as a pump operator who doesn’t just react—but proactively ensures the fireground runs smoothly from the first-due arrival. Because when the pump operator succeeds, the entire operation succeeds."
