November 2014

Happy Thanksgiving!

November has certainly been eventful at BGSU. Not only did we see the first snowfall of the season, our football team clinched a spot in the MAC championship and will be playing in Detroit on Dec. 5 to retain that crown. We will learn our bowl game location on Dec. 7.

Watch-Party

Our alumni are using games as an opportunity to reconnect through watch parties. Our new assistant vice president for alumni and annual giving, Becky Kocher, had the opportunity to attend one hosted by Falcon Flames Pete ’08 and Kristin ’11 Winovich in Toledo. The MAC Championship game might be the perfect time for you to get together with fellow Falcons in your area!

In other sports news, our hockey team is now ranked #15 in the country, and this year, men’s soccer returned to the championship match of the MAC Tournament for the first time in 11 years, since 2003. BGSU last won the MAC Tournament in 1997, and last won a MAC regular-season title in 2002.

November is a time when Americans give thanks, and I had the opportunity recently to help two members of our University community celebrate becoming citizens of the United States at a naturalization ceremony on our Bowling Green campus. You can read more about student Reem Abu Halel and faculty member Alexander Tarnovsky and their journeys to citizenship here.

BCI-lab

For quite some time, I’ve been telling you about the new Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s crime lab on campus. It was so exciting to participate in the opening earlier this month, along with state and local dignitaries.  The nearly 30,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art facility will be the home to over 40 BCI staff performing investigative and laboratory services. We are introducing new academic programs in this area, and our students will be able to get experience in the lab.

After Black Friday and Cyber Monday comes #GivingTuesday! on Dec. 2. We are excited to be a part of the national movement of giving back. Here is a great video to learn more about it. Our goal is 214 donors in 2014. Donors are welcome to give to any BGSU fund they choose. While we anticipate most people will make their gift online, donors are welcome to send a check with Giving Tuesday written in the memo line.

The 10th anniversary of ArtsX will take place  on Dec. 6. This annual showcase of fine and performing arts by our students and faculty is something you don’t want to miss! In addition, as part of this year’s event, the Festival Series is presenting “Amahl and the Night Visitors” performed by the Bowling Green Opera Theater.

The new issue of BGSU Magazine is out, with great articles about our amazing alumni. In this issue you can read about faculty and alumni authors and our students’ applied learning experiences and meet the Class of 2018! The magazine is also available as an app at the iTunes store.

Speaking of the magazine, we are interested in doing an article about our alumni who have gone on to have successful careers as judges. If you are, or know of, a BGSU alumnus who is a judge, please drop a note to editor Terri Carroll at tcarrol@bgsu.edu.

As I join my family in giving thanks, I know I am truly blessed to have the opportunity to lead this great University. Thank you for your support of BGSU!
