February 2013
Cupid was certainly busy at BGSU this month! With more than 25 percent of our alumni married to a fellow Bowling Green graduate, I enjoyed the many pictures and stories shared by our Falcon Flames, including Jack ’61, ’63 and Jackie ’61, ’63 Harbaugh, who were interviewed before their sons faced off as competing coaches in Super Bowl XLVII. I even enjoyed a little Valentine spirit of my own when the brothers of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia wowed me with a fabulous serenade!
Valentine’s Day also brought more progress to our campus Master Plan when Wood County Hospital and BGSU broke ground for the new Falcon Health Center. Opening in fall 2013, the center will allow us to provide vital services to students, faculty and staff within a state-of-the-art patient care facility.
In more construction news, our construction management students won first place at the Associated Schools of Construction regional competition. Competing against 22 other schools, students estimated projects in the heavy highway and commercial construction areas. Rarely does a single school win in both divisions. Congratulations!
Congratulations also to our faculty in sociology and psychology who continue to garner national attention for groundbreaking research about the changing demographics of the American family. Read about their fascinating discoveries in the Spring 2013 BGSU Magazine.
The College of Business Administration also continues to build its reach and reputation with the 10th annual Sebo Series in Entrepreneurship on Friday, April 12. “Social Economics: Adding Value to Business with Social Media” will include tips from social media expert and best-selling author Erik Qualman.
While our business students benefit from our national leadership, so too do our education students. With the country’s growing emphasis on early childhood education, BGSU students are going to have a special advantage with the state's only Inclusive Early Childhood Education Program. It's a unique degree that will allow students to earn two licenses through one program. It was approved last year and is accepting students beginning this fall.
We all benefit as the BGSU arts community continues to share its talent through a variety of performances, including an exciting opportunity for faculty and students from the MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music to perform live, in New York, at Le Poisson Rouge on April 3. The Department of Theatre and Film, in conjunction with the BGSU Opera Theater and College of Musical Arts, will present “The Merry Widow” in the Wolfe Center for the Arts March 22 - 24.
And, of course, BGSU Athletics continues to bring the campus together in cheering on the Falcons as both basketball teams and the hockey team are positioned to make runs in their respective conference tournaments. We have another great reason to cheer with a transformational gift of $650,000 from Dr. Lee and Marge Meserve. Their generosity will allow us to install lights at Meserve Softball Field, endow a pair of scholarships for student-athletes and fund the Meserves' Champions Circle membership for the next 20 years.
Thank you to the Meserves and all of you for continued support of BGSU!
