Feline frenzy at BGSU catapults Pudge the cat and George Carlson into the spotlight

BGSU long snapper is having a busy final year with his cat, Pudge, going viral

Bowling Green State University has become a household name as of late. Some people think it’s because the University welcomed its largest and most successful freshman class ever, while others credit Eddie George for winning his first game as the BGSU head football coach. While those achievements are certainly newsworthy, nothing has captured the nation’s attention quite like Pudge the cat.

Pudge, an exotic shorthair with a round face and a perpetually sticking-out tongue, went viral after becoming the BGSU Falcons’ unofficial “mascat.” The instant fame threw him and his owner, BGSU long-snapper George Carlson, into the national spotlight.

“I brought him into the locker room on off days, hoping to bring a smile to some people’s faces,” Carlson said. “People loved him. The football team, fans and University have fully embraced him.”

After redshirting his freshman year, Carlson is in his fifth year of school and final year of eligibility. Wrapping up what will be his final year at BGSU, Carlson is excited to make the most of his college experience, but admits he never expected the year he’s had thus far.

“Pudge has taken me on quite the journey with photoshoots, interviews and social media exposure,” Carlson said. “I’m excited that my last year has been so eventful. I get to do what I love on the football field and celebrate with Pudge both on and off the field.”

Carlson and Pudge have been featured on local and national news channels, including CNN, Sports Illustrated, Good Morning America, The Washington Post and the Associated Press. Pudge’s unique face has been seen by millions of people across the country, with major outlets like College Game Day and Fox Sports also featuring his story.

Before Pudge shot to fame, he was just a mellow cat that Carlson’s parents bought him. He lived off campus with Carlson and never even stepped foot outside the house until this year.

“Pudge has been a staple in our house. My dad and sister love seeing him all over the internet,” said Carlson. “To us, he’s just a normal cat.

“After taking him outside, he became the unofficial locker room cat. Pudge brings everyone so much joy, and everyone is so excited to see him.”

After five years on campus, Carlson realized how special BGSU and the surrounding community were, referring to it as his “home away from home.” Pudge’s celebrity status only magnified that feeling.

“The student experience at BGSU is second to none, and the opportunity to play Division I football has been a dream come true,” Carlson said. “With Pudge by my side this year, I’ve realized how lucky I am to have created a true family here at BGSU and with the football team.”

Pudge will continue his tour of fame, joining the football team at their away game in Cincinnati on Sept. 6 and at Homecoming on Sept. 13.
