BGSU women’s soccer team wraps up successful season

Season culminated in runner-up finish in MAC Tournament

The Bowling Green State University women’s soccer team ended the season with a 13-7-1 record after a runner-up finish in the Mid-American Conference Tournament.

The Falcons lost 2-1 in overtime to the University of Toledo on Nov. 5 at Kent State University in the MAC Championship.

BGSU coach Matt Fannon said he couldn’t have been more proud of his players and the effort they put forth during the season.

“Our players every day have brought an energy and enthusiasm that has just made it so much fun to be a part of,” he said after the championship. “Hopefully, today serves as motivation going forward.”

The Falcons finished with a record of 13-7-1 and a winning percentage of .643. Both marks are second-best in University history, surpassed only by the 2005 squad (14-7-2, .652).

Counting her goal in the championship, junior Erica Hubert scored nine goals in the final 11 games of the season and had 12 overall on the season, the second most in the MAC.

Senior forward Skylar Fleak finished her career with 27 goals and 64 points, third best and fourth best, respectively, for BGSU. She was MAC Offensive Player of the Week three times in 2017.

As a team, BGSU finished with the best offense in the MAC with 43 goals and 135 points and 2.05 goals per game.

Looking to next year, the Falcons featured eight first-year players on their 2017 roster, and four of them combined for seven of the team's 43 goals. Marissa Swindell had three goals, while Sophia Barnes had two.
