Sparking learning through engagement
The University community is invited to hear visiting professor Dr. Jennifer D. Blitvich speak about “Promoting Student Learning: Active Learning Through Participation and Engagement.” Blitvich, deputy head of the School of Health Sciences and Psychology at Federation University in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia, will speak at 3 p.m. Aug. 18 in 108 Eppler North. Her visit is hosted by the School of Human Movement, Sport and Leisure Studies.
Blitvich will share strategies for improving student learning through enhanced engagement brought about by increased appreciation of scholarly activity. She will discuss the learning benefits that have come from introducing students to actual problems that are outside of their current personal experiences and encouraging them to become reflective learners in considering issues that are new to them. She will present several key exemplars from her own work to encourage BGSU faculty to accept the challenge of helping students appreciate their role as active scholars in the Academy.
Blivich's presentation will focus on several specific strategies, describing their development and implementation. She will consider the benefits of student participation for the development of new knowledge and the importance of active participation to achieve this goal.
