When is the NSSE open?

The survey was available from February 25 through March 29, 2021.

Who is invited to participate?

At BGSU first-year freshmen and seniors will be invited to participate in 2021. 

Why is there a message about NSSE when I log into Canvas?

We wanted to make taking the survey as easy as possible for you so a link to the survey was included in Canvas.

How many emails will I receive to invite me to complete the NSSE?

BGSU sent a total of five emails. After completing the NSSE, students did not receive any additional reminders.

What is student engagement?

Student engagement represents two critical features of collegiate quality. The first is the amount of time and effort students put into their studies and other educationally purposeful activities. The second is how the institution deploys its resources and organizes the curriculum and other learning opportunities to get students to participate in activities that decades of research studies show are linked to student learning.

What is the survey about?

The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) measures undergraduate student participation in programs and activities provided to promote learning and personal development.  BGSU uses the survey results to better understand how students are connecting with the university and to identify effective programs and practices and then applies this information to guide curriculum development and co-curricular program design.  BGSU’s participation in NSSE is part of a coordinated set of strategies designed to enhance the undergraduate experience for all BGSU students, including improving retention, persistence, and graduation rates.

How many students participate in the NSSE?

Over 300,867 students completed NSSE in 2020. Approximately 6 million students have completed the survey since 2000.

How many institutions participate in the NSSE?

511 colleges and universities will participate in NSSE 2021. Over 1,600 have participated since 2000.

Nearly 160 Carnegie-classified research universities (65 “very high” and 92 “high” research activity) have participated in NSSE at least once in the last five years, including 30 Association of American Universities (AAU) member institutions, representing about 76% of all U.S. research universities.
