Frequently Asked Questions and Answers for the Office of the Dean of Students 

In the Office of the Dean of Students, we regularly answer many questions that may help connect you with the right resources. Below you will find some common questions we get and where to go to find the answers. 

You can report concerns about a student's well-being or behavior by filling out a reporting form here.

Contact the office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships at 419-372-2651 or visit them from 8 AM to 5 PM Monday through Friday in 227 Bowen-Thompson Student Union.

The Dean of Students oversees student matters related to student conduct, conflict resolution, interpersonal relations and prevention, and supporting student during personal hardships. While an Academic Dean oversees academic related concerns and policies and can help with things related to your specific academic program and academic policies. Please note that there are multiple Academic Deans at BGSU. You will want to contact the dean that oversees your major. You can find a list of the BGSU Colleges here.

If you live on-campus and have not done so yet, talk to your RA first to see if they can help you resolve the issue. If you have done this or live off-campus and need some additional support in navigating this conflict, you can request conflict coaching here.  

Attendance policies are determined by your professors. If you are experiencing circumstances that may affect your attendance, please contact the Office of the Dean of Students about an absence notification to your professors. Please note that an absence notification does not automatically excuse your absence, and the decision to excuse or accommodate missed classwork remains at your professors' discretion.

FERPA (the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) is a federal law that protects the privacy of a student's education records. Because of FERPA, the Office of the Dean of Students may be limited in what information we can share with parents, guardians, or other individuals without the student's consent. If you have questions about what information can be shared, please contact our office.
