Students are not alone. The BGSU Counseling Center offers same-day, drop-in appointments for urgent crisis counseling. This service provides immediate, short-term support to help stabilize, problem-solve and connect with resources.

What is a crisis?

A crisis is any situation in which an individual feels unable to cope, is concerned about their safety or the safety of others, or is experiencing overwhelming distress.

Common reasons to seek crisis counseling

  • Thoughts of harming yourself or others
  • Recent trauma, assault or abuse
  • Panic attacks or extreme emotional distress
  • Concern for the safety of a friend
  • Death of a loved one
  • Loss of touch with reality (hallucinations or delusions)

  • Suicide risk assessments
  • Immediate counseling for students in crisis
  • Brief consultations for non-crisis concerns
  • Support and resources following a crisis event

Consultation

Consultations are a good fit for those who want to:

  • Discuss a concern and receive support without committing to ongoing counseling
  • Explore strategies for coping with academic or personal stress
  • Seek advice on handling a challenging relationship or roommate situation
  • Learn about campus and community mental health resources
  • Talk through a situation involving a student they are concerned about

After-hours crisis support

If you need urgent support outside of regular hours, call the Wood County Crisis Line at 419-502-HOPE (4673). This free, confidential service is available 24/7 and is operated by Unison Health.

Confidentiality

Crisis counseling and consultations are confidential within the limits of the law. Information shared with Counseling Center staff will not be disclosed without a student’s written consent, except in situations where disclosure is required by law, such as when there is a concern about serious harm to self or others, suspected abuse or neglect of a minor, or as otherwise mandated by court order.
