Untitled

Watercolor on paper

18” x 24” each

These paintings represent my reaction to the COVID-19 quarantine. “Rewiring” my BFA work to fit the theme of this show involved switching from oils to watercolors. Each of the paintings contain the use of repetitious mark-making in order to convey feelings of insanity and exhaustion. The paintings’ attitudes toggle between chaos and peacefulness in the hope of showing my state of mind.

I focus on feelings of happiness associated with being with loved ones yet acknowledge the chaos that surrounds me. Everything feels surreal in a dissociated way. I attempt to represent this conflicted state-of-mind both physically through the gesture of the brushstroke and the use of colors that represent certain emotions. The color is dull in some areas and bold in others causing a visual discourse, making the shapes appear happy but lost. Overall, I hope to inspire a connection with others struggling to get by in this time of isolation.
