Do my previous writing courses transfer?

Welcome to BGSU! We want to make sure you are completing your degree in a timely manner, so if you have taken a writing course at another university and you want to transfer those credits, you’ll need to complete the transfer processes below.

Before Submitting Credit Transfer Requests

If you have taken writing courses at another university, first check:

or

These resources will show whether your writing credits will transfer. However, you may learn that your writing course does not transfer. If you believe your composition course should count for transfer credit, you can submit a transfer request.

How to Submit a Credit Transfer Request

  1. Find the course description from your prior university’s catalog (usually available online), looking for course objectives for WRIT courses below:

  2. Locate a syllabus from your previous course* detailing the assignments required (which should identify the type of writing, length, required source materials, etc.). Show how the course fits the course objectives for our courses above.

  1. Fill out the  Transfer Request Form

*NOTE: University departments often keep syllabi for many years; contact your former university to obtain a copy of your syllabus from the semester you took the course if needed.

After You Submit a Credit Transfer Request

The University Writing Program will direct the Office of Registration and Records to transfer the composition course as BGSU's WRIT 1110 or WRIT 1120 only if the composition course required the components outlined in the transfer request form.**

If the program determines that the course is not transferable as WRIT 1110 or WRIT 1120, you will need to take WRIT 1110 and WRIT 1120 prior to graduation, preferably as soon as possible.

**NOTE: Essays and research papers written in classes other than the composition course you are trying to transfer as WRIT 1110 or WRIT 1120 will have no bearing on the transfer credit decision for WRIT 1110 or WRIT 1120.
