Meet the Man Behind The Landmark Supreme Court Same-Sex Marriage Case

Jim Obergefell’s court case, Obergefell v. Hodges, was the landmark marriage equality case in part on the status of Obergefell’s relationship with longtime partner John Arthur. The couple filed suit in July 2013 when Ohio refused to recognize their Maryland marriage license issued a week earlier. Arthur died three months later from Lou Gehrig’s disease. The battle continued ultimately working its way to the Supreme Court. On June 26, 2015, the high court sided with Obergefell in a 5-4 ruling stating that the fundamental right to marry is guaranteed to same-sex couples throughout the United States.

Join this self-proclaimed accidental activist on the campus of Bowling Green State University on October 7, 2015. Hear in Jim's own words about his journey with John and their fight that resulted in marriage equality for over 200 million Americans.
