Policy Statement and Purpose
This policy defines the eligibility criteria, roles, and responsibilities of Principal Investigators (PIs) at Bowling Green State University (BGSU) for externally sponsored projects. It ensures alignment with the BGSU Academic Charter and federal requirements. PI status is typically reserved for permanent employees who have a continuing appointment with the university. Individuals must have the appropriate level of authority and responsibility to independently direct research, manage budgets, comply with the terms and conditions of awards and supervise project personnel. This policy does not govern eligibility to serve as a PI for internally funded or unfunded research, scholarly, or creative activities. Eligibility for such activities is determined by the policies of the relevant academic or administrative unit or by the specific requirements of the internal funding program, if applicable. All research, scholarly, or creative activities remain subject to applicable Research Integrity requirements, policies, reviews, and approvals, regardless of funding source.
The Division of Research is responsible for oversight and facilitation of compliance with applicable University, Federal, State, and sponsor requirements. This Policy is intended to provide a general framework describing Principal Investigator eligibility and responsibilities. Principal Investigator obligations may be modified from time to time in response to changes in laws, regulations, institutional policies, or sponsor requirements, and Principal Investigators are responsible for complying with all such applicable requirements as they may be amended.

The activity usually encompasses a defined scope of work, requires deliverables or measurable outcomes, and is generally subject to requirements such as performance periods, financial oversight, reporting, or compliance obligations.
