Hazel H. Smith Scholarship

General Information

This $750 scholarship is available to a Bowling Green State University off-campus or commuting full time undergraduate student.  This scholarship is awarded in memory of Hazel H. Smith, a former BGSU student who was instrumental in the evolution of an area that would be known as the Off-Campus Student Center.  Mrs. Smith, a pioneer in the field of commuter centers became the first full-time administrator of the program in 1967 and served in this capacity until shortly before her death in 1986.  On April 14, 1989, the program was named in her honor.  In 2002, the program moved to its new location in the Bowen-Thompson Student Union and was renamed Off-Campus Student Services. The heart of the services, The Hazel H. Smith Lounge, is now located on the second floor of the Bowen-Thompson Student Union.

Criteria for the Recipient

The recipient must be a Bowling Green State University off-campus, commuting, or nontraditional full time student and be in good academic and conduct standing with the University.  While it is not technically a need-based or grade-based scholarship, these factors may play a determining role in cases where two or more applicants are at similar levels of contribution/involvement.  The applicant must be returning to classes for the following fall semester, as funds will not be available until August 15th to be applied to the fall semester bill.  All candidates will be considered on the basis of their contributions to off-campus/commuting/nontraditional student-life at BGSU.  The candidates should exemplify the Hazel H. Smith spirit of caring and giving of themselves to create a positive environment in Off-Campus Student Services.  The scholarship recipient will be selected by a committee.

Any questions regarding this scholarship or the application can be directed to Off-Campus Student Services at 419-372-2843 or by email at offcampus@bgsu.edu
