BGSU senior Luke Spoors had one main goal when he entered college – obtain as much hands-on experience as possible through internships. Thanks to a diverse learning experience in the supply chain management program and Bowling Green's strong partnerships with more than 100 organizations, Spoors successfully completed three internships before his senior year. After interning with BGSU industry partners GROB Systems Inc in Bluffton, Ohio and Marathon Petroleum Corp. in Findlay, Ohio, Spoors interned with gold-tier partner, Owens Corning, where he worked in the sourcing department and was tasked with conducting a bid process for a plant in North Carolina.

Bowling Green State University partners with dozens of organizations across Ohio and beyond, giving students in all majors the opportunity to gain real-world, hands-on experience through classroom projects, internships and co-ops. For senior Luke Spoors, the University’s industry partnerships helped him secure three internships, including two with Fortune 500 companies, before his senior year.
“Bowling Green is tied to a lot of big companies, including Owens Corning," said Spoors, who completed an internship there this summer in supply chain sourcing. “The direct access that Bowling Green has to these large companies was crucial in finding internships and job opportunities."
As a leading manufacturer of roofing, insulation and doors headquartered in downtown Toledo, Owens Corning gave Spoors experience in the company’s door sourcing department. Applying what he learned at BGSU, Spoors was tasked with conducting a bid process for a plant in North Carolina, working with vendors and coordinating with Owens Corning to make the best decisions.
During his internship at Owens Corning, Spoors said he felt prepared for the role thanks to the diverse learning experiences he received at BGSU.
“Bowling Green does a good job at promoting adaptability with diversified supply chain classes,” Spoors said. “I learned something new in each of my classes. BGSU prepared me with hands-on activities, case studies, projects and opportunities to hear real-world scenarios from working professionals.”
Before interning at Owens Corning, Spoors interned at Marathon Petroleum Corp. in Findlay and GROB Systems, Inc., a global manufacturer based in Bluffton, Ohio, during his sophomore and junior years.
“Coming into college, my main goal was to get as much hands-on experience as I could with internships. I know that's what truly sets you up for success," Spoors said. "I think Bowling Green does a great job at connecting young professionals to these opportunities through career fairs and networking opportunities. I definitely took advantage of that, and it’s helped me grow so much.”
Spoors said he chose BGSU for the supply chain program in the nationally ranked Schmidthorst College of Business. Bowling Green's supply chain management students are highly sought after by companies across the U.S., with students often receiving multiple job offers before graduation.
Spoors called campus his “second home,” crediting the University’s size for his ability to get involved and succeed outside the classroom.
“When I came in as a freshman, I didn’t know where I was going to find myself,” he said. “Three years later, I was sitting in front of company leaders at Owens Corning making real-world decisions. I credit Bowling Green for giving me the platform to be successful.”
Spoors also credits the Kuhlin Hub for Career Design and Connections with his success, utilizing the center to fine-tune his resume before the career fair, design his own career pathway and receive coaching on interviewing and presenting himself.
“Bowling Green allowed me to dip my toe into different industries to see what I liked and disliked,” Spoors said. “Because of the support I received from the Kuhlin Hub, I was able to complete three impressive internships and determine my career path.”
