When Jamia Ray ’18 first came to Bowling Green State University, she thought she had her future figured out. As a first-year student double majoring in international business and management, she had a plan – until she discovered a new passion that she couldn’t ignore.
“I changed my major after learning about the Tourism, Leisure and Event Planning (TLEP) program,” Ray said. “Even though the program was just getting started, it offered so many hands-on experiences and support from faculty.”
Now known as tourism, hospitality and event management, the program gave Ray opportunities to build real-world skills while still in college. She worked as a student building manager, supported the events and conferences office and completed an internship every summer.
Through career fairs and on-campus networking, she landed internships with companies like Speedway, Acceleration Systems and the American Heart Association – a foundation that helped launch her career.
“BGSU allowed me to forge my own path with grace, grit, tenacity and courage,” she said. “I learned that it was OK not to have all the answers, but also how to be creative and embrace the future.”
From student experience to career success
After graduation, Ray’s hands-on experience translated directly into a full-time job as an event planning coordinator at Franklin Park Conservatory in Columbus, Ohio. She went on to work at the Grand Event Center as a sales and catering manager, then became an event manager at the Greater Columbus Convention Center, where she oversaw large-scale city events.
Nearly a quarter of BGSU tourism, hospitality and event management graduates are in management positions within a year of graduation.
Today, Ray manages mid-sized group events at the Hilton Columbus Downtown, and recently launched her own business as a travel agent and representative.
“I love what I do because it’s different every day,” Ray said. “Hospitality will always be at the core of who I am and what I love, but I’ve found a new passion for helping people travel.”
Reflecting on her journey, Ray said her only regret is not believing in herself sooner.
“I wish I had the confidence I do now," she said. "Everyone is underqualified until they’re given a chance. I had the experience and the work ethic – I just wish I had realized my value earlier.”
Finding her passion and confidence at BGSU, Ray has turned her experience into more than a degree – developing a thriving career and launching her own business.
