The architecture and environmental design program at Bowling Green State University is designed to bridge the gap between architecture and construction management, encouraging deep collaboration between the two fields. It was this unique foundation that prepared junior Noelle Bench for her internship at Alliance Engineering in Troy, Ohio.

"This summer I worked on commercial projects; drafted mechanical, electrical and plumbing drawings; created layouts; conducted site visits and participated in client meetings," said Bench. "The unique program design at BGSU gave me the foundation needed to confidently engage in the diverse work experiences and embrace the rigorous work ethic required to excel in this field."

Offering students a design studio-based learning experience, the School of the Built Environment provides students technical coursework using cutting-edge technology and digital fabrication tools for computer modeling, construction methods and structures. Simultaneously teaching construction management and architecture, the school is the only one of its kind in Ohio.

As an architecture and environmental design student, Bench has taken courses in construction, art, design and related fields that have enriched her architectural education. This unique combination of courses allowed Bench to bridge theory and practice — a blend that immediately impressed David Kessler, partner and founder of Alliance Engineering.

"Previous co-op students didn't always understand basic construction and architectural applications," Kessler said. "Noelle opened our eyes to what a student can bring to the table. She has performed well above our expectations and has been an outstanding part of our team."

Kessler, a 40-year veteran of the industry, was particularly impressed.

"I have seen a lot of people come and go," he added. "I would say Noelle is in the top 3% with knowledge, ability and motivation."

Describing her co-op experience as "enriching," Bench has been actively involved in every stage of the architectural process, providing her with hands-on learning opportunities that have deepened her understanding of the field.

As Bench returns to BGSU for her junior year, she leaves a lasting impression at Alliance Engineering.

"Noelle has set the bar high for future interns here," Kessler said. "BGSU has set her up for success by combining architecture and construction trades. We are sad to see her go, but I believe she will have a great future in this field. We look forward to hopefully being part of Noelle's future."
