BGSU prepares Ohio firefighter for leadership role through 100% online fire administration degree program

The fire administration degree at BGSU allowed Neal Ressler '24 to advance his career as a firefighter

For nearly two decades, Neal Ressler '24 worked his way up the ladder at the City of Fairfield Fire Department, located just north of Cincinnati.

With a passion for helping others, serving his community and working alongside his fellow firefighters, Ressler was working as a lieutenant when he set his sights on the title of battalion chief — the highest-ranking officer on duty.

The position required experience and a bachelor's degree, which prompted Ressler to enroll in the fire administration program at BGSU.

"I had attended Bowling Green State University's State Fire School several times and knew the quality of classes that were offered," said Ressler. "When I saw that they offered a Bachelor of Science in Fire Administration (FIAD), I jumped at the opportunity to improve my skills as a leader."

Located in the department of political science at BGSU, students not only take courses specific to fire service and emergency management, they also take broader courses that provide them with the knowledge needed to advance in their careers in the public sector.

"The FIAD program provides students with a well-rounded approach to leadership, including courses in public administration, ethics, law, finance and government," said Dr. Dominic Wells, director of the FIAD program.

"Encouraged to use critical thinking and effective communication skills, graduates are able to recognize ethical issues, examine various perspectives and react appropriately within their organizations and community."

Through the program's 100% online format, Ressler was able to take classes while continuing to work as a firefighter, positioning him for career growth.

"BGSU allowed me to develop professional communication skills in both writing and speaking, preparing me to handle diverse situations on the job," said Ressler. "The program being offered online made it the perfect option for me as a working professional. I completed the degree at my own pace, received personalized advising as a student and was given a roadmap for success."

After completing the program in 2024, Ressler became eligible to apply for the battalion chief position at his station. Equipped with the knowledge and experience gained at BGSU, he applied and was named the City of Fairfield Fire Department's new battalion chief.

"I'm thankful for my time at BGSU," said Ressler. "I have been given the opportunity to lead my shift as battalion chief, and I plan to grow in my new role. I highly encourage anyone considering advancing in their career to explore the BGSU FIAD program."
