BGSU film prize endowed

BOWLING GREEN, O.—A new annual prize has been endowed for an aspiring student filmmaker, with funds donated by one longtime supporter of Bowling Green State University film studies in memory of another.

Dr. Ralph Haven Wolfe, Distinguished Teaching Professor Emeritus of English and Gish Professor of Film Studies, created the Edgar Fisher Daniels Prize in Filmmaking, named after the late emeritus professor and 1971-78 chair of the English department. Daniels also taught classes in film and published articles on independent filmmakers. He taught at BGSU from 1953-81 and died in 2011.

To be eligible for the prize, a student must be a rising sophomore, junior or senior with a declared major or minor in Department of Theatre and Film; be an undergraduate filmmaker who produces a body of outstanding creative work that emerges among his or her peers’ work as especially insightful, experimental and/or technically assured; and be nominated by at least one member of the film production faculty in the Department of Theatre and Film.

A committee of film production faculty from the department will select the prize recipient.

The prize is the latest in a long legacy of support from Wolfe, who has been affiliated with the University for more than 50 years, first as a student and eventually as an endowed professor and recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award. He led the effort to establish the Dorothy and Lillian Gish Film Theater and Gallery in Hanna Hall, and has brought several film stars to campus in addition to Lillian Gish, including Lauren Hutton, Roddy McDowall and Eva Marie Saint. The curator of the theater and gallery, he also funded the video viewing center and resource room in Hanna Hall, which the BGSU trustees named in his honor.

Additional gifts to the endowment in Dr. Daniels’ memory may be made to the prize fund. Checks should be made payable to the Bowling Green State University Foundation, Inc. and mailed to: Mileti Alumni Center, 136 N. Mercer Road, Bowling Green, OH 43403.
