Community invited to explore new dining center

BOWLING GREEN, O.—Bowling Green State University will open the doors of one of its new dining centers to the community Aug. 30.

A ribbon-cutting event will take place at 10 a.m. in front of The Oaks dining center, which is located at the corner of Ridge Street and Thurstin Avenue. BGSU President Mary Ellen Mazey along, with representatives from Chartwells Higher Education Dining Services and Chartwells’ design and build team, will be on hand for the celebration.

The community is invited to tour The Oaks following the ribbon cutting and sample menu items immediately following the ceremony. BGSU Dining chefs will be available to speak with guests.

BGSU also opened a second dining facility this fall. Carillon Place and The Oaks house Chartwells’ award-winning “Pulse on Dining” residential dining brand. The Oaks also features a Dunkin’ Donuts franchise, while one of the first Pinkberry frozen yogurt locations in the Midwest will open inside Carillon Place next month.

Both buildings were built with the environment in mind. The Oaks will be Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified. Among its many “green” features are solar energy panels, a water reclamation system and a rooftop garden, which will provide fresh herbs for the kitchen.

Carillon Place was also built with recycled materials, is energy efficient and will utilize water conservation methods as well as an alternative-energy delivery vehicle.

BGSU and Chartwells joined forces in 2009. The company now manages all dining and catering operations on campus. Chartwells, a division of Compass Group, provides dining services for over 210 colleges and universities around the country.
