Casting Statement/Audition Info

Casting in theatre and film has a long history of exclusionary, unjust, and harmful practices and impacts. This history also includes innovations and critical responses to the world around us and the practice of storytelling. As such, conversations about and practices in casting are fluid. In light of this, the BGSU Department of Theatre and Film engages with various approaches to casting, including color-conscious, identity-conscious, and coalitional casting. We recognize that considerations of identity—including race, gender and gender identity, sexual orientation, ethnicity and national origin, neurodiversity, and disability—shape society and the stories we tell, and are therefore vital components to the casting process.

 Due to the fluidity of conversations regarding casting we seek continuous education, reflection, and action. The following sources are authored by individuals currently contributing to conversations about inclusive casting practices:
