Research Forward Internal Funding Opportunities

The Division of Research offers 4 types of competitively selected awards to advance the research and creative activities of Bargaining Unit Faculty Members (BUFMs).

Please note that all applications will be submitted using an online form instead of email. To ensure a fair and prompt review process, late submissions will not be accepted.

Propel Travel Grants

Created to complement and extend existing travel funding, these competitively selected grants provide up to $500 to support eligible travel expenditure of BUFMs who will deliver (a) invited or contributed presentations at academic conferences or (b) invited or contributed creative performances at an external venue. The conference, performance, or external venue should be hosted by a national or international organization. Eligible faculty can receive up to 1 competitively selected propel travel grant per academic year.

      • Spring Propel Grants provide funding for projects between March 1, 2026 and September 30, 2026.

Elevate Grants

Elevate Grants provide up to $1000 to help BUFMs complete research and creative activities. The funding should play an important role in helping awardees produce a final project, product, or deliverable (e.g., a publication, art piece, presentation, or performance). Eligible faculty can receive up to 1 competitively selected Elevate Grant per academic year.

      • Spring 2026 Impact Grants provide funding for projects between April 1, 2026 to April 1, 2027.

Catalyst Grants

Structured as a seed grant, funding will support BUFMs with up to $10,000 to conduct pivotal research to support the submission of a substantive external grant proposal of at least $100,000. Please see the Catalyst Grant’s eligibility information for more details about this funding opportunity.

Accelerator Grants

Designed to support active researchers who want to take their work to the next level, accelerator grants provide summer faculty stipends and research assistants to support the submission of a substantive external grant proposal. Priority will be given to BUFMs who have already received funding and need additional resources to grow. PI’s should be nominated by their Dean.

  • Application Timeline/Key Dates:
    • Research Associate Deans should nominate faculty by 5:00pm ET on December 5, 2025.
    • The Division of Research will inform faculty who were nominated and provide them with relevant application information by December 9, 2025.
    • Nominees should submit their application packets to the Division of Research by 5:00pm ET on January 30, 2026.
    • Applicants will receive a decision from the Division of Research by March 13, 2026.
    • Funded projects may begin on April 1, 2026, with funds expended by May 5, 2027.
    • Each funded project’s interim report is due by May 12, 2027. The project's final report is due no later than December 31, 2027.

Faculty Research Awards

Each year, BGSU recognizes faculty for their outstanding research and creative work.

  • Olscamp Research Award
    • This annual award recognizes a BGSU faculty member for their outstanding scholarly or creative accomplishments during the previous 3-year period. Awardees are selected based on their work’s significance within their discipline or academic area, national or international import, artistic or scholarly creativity, and contribution to knowledge, culture, or professional practice.
  • Outstanding Early Career Award
    • Aiming to recognize and reward scholarly excellence among early career investigators, this annual award provides discretionary funds for the support of future scholarly activities. Awardees are selected based on the quality and impact of their scholarly and creative achievements, their potential for continued professional growth, and the quality and significance of their long-term research plan.
