November 2013

Dear Alumni and Friends,

What a remarkable season for BGSU Football! The team entered the regular season's final game against Buffalo with an 8-3 record and the sixth-best defense in the country. On the other side of the football, redshirt sophomore Travis Greene ranked 11th nationally in rushing. After the Buffalo victory, the Falcons will aim to win the MAC championship! Join us at 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6, at Buffalo Wild Wings for a pregame event. Kickoff is at 8 p.m. at Ford Field. Then stay tuned for our bowl schedule.

Even if you can’t make it to the championship game, please join us on campus on Friday, Dec. 6, from 6–10 p.m. for the ninth annual ArtsX. This free event includes faculty and student mixed media, print, paint, glass and graphics exhibits and “Cinema Optique,” which features 3-D art projections on the exterior sloping wall of The Wolfe Center for the Arts. Tickets are available online or at 419-372-8171 for the Festival Series holiday musical performance at 7 p.m. in Kobacker Hall.

Looking ahead to the New Year, alumni are invited to a special day on campus for our annual BGSU Alumni Day on Saturday, Jan. 25. Connect with Falcon friends while enjoying men’s basketball vs. Miami and hockey vs. Lake Superior State with a special dinner at Mileti Alumni Center between the games.

It’s also the time of year to nominate a deserving alumnus for the BGSUCollege Alumni Awards. Nominations for Falcons who exemplify professional, civic, cultural and charitable excellence are available online and are due Jan. 25, 2014.

Honors College Dean Simon Morgan-Russell and I are seeking to connect with BGSU alumni who have won prestigious scholarships such as the Marshall, Rhodes, Goldwater, Truman, Gilman or Mitchell awards. Our new Honors College is attracting high-achieving students who could benefit from your mentorship on their academic journeys. Simply email me if you would be interested in working with these students.

Our students continue to amaze me with their accomplishments. Junior Michele Tanke-Juska recently made the largest gift recorded from a student to the BGSU Student Legacy Campaign, the philanthropic effort led by students to urge their peers to contribute to Bowling Green State University.

Michele’s generosity is mirrored by Falcon alumni and friends whose support is on display in our fall issue of BGSU Magazine. This special issue features an annual report of donor giving and the far-reaching impact of philanthropy on student success.

Regards,

Mary Ellen Mazey, Ph.D.
President
