BGSU to host 39th annual Women in STEM program on Nov. 1

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – With the goal of growing interest in STEM-based careers, Bowling Green State University will hold the 39th annual Women in STEM program for sixth through eighth grade students from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 1, at the Bowen Thompson Student Union.

Presented by the Northwest Ohio Center for Excellence in STEM Education (NWO) in the BGSU College of Education and Human Development, the Women in STEM program will highlight various STEM – science, technology, engineering and mathematics – career opportunities for more than 330 young women from around northwestern Ohio through hands-on activities and events.

Students will spend the day exploring and performing experiments in physics, astronomy, chemistry, biology, engineering, mathematics and technology while learning about STEM fields and what STEM has to offer in high school and beyond.

Presenters from a wide range of STEM professions, including BGSU faculty, will offer breakout sessions and hands-on workshops. A keynote address will also be given by Lydia Denton, a 14-year-old inventor from Wilson, North Carolina, whose personal challenges inspire her creations.

NWO is a partnership among area universities, K-12 schools and community partners with a goal to advance STEM education for people of all ages.

Sponsors of the 39th annual Women in STEM program include BGSU, Lubrizol, PPG, The Andersons, Columbia Gas and NWO.
