Senior Natalie Arrington recalls playing at athletic games, community events and making a trip of a lifetime to Ireland

When Natalie Arrington visited Bowling Green State University, she was looking for two things: a strong music education program and an active marching band. What she didn't expect was all of the musical, teaching, personal and leadership experiences that she would have over the next four years.
"I remember hearing about the Falcon Marching Band practicing every day and putting on a new show for every home football game, and I was hooked," Arrington said. "That type of dedication, commitment and showmanship was precisely what I was looking for in a college marching band."

As the largest student organization on campus, the Falcon Marching Band and its members play a significant role in BGSU ranking as the No. 1 public university in Ohio for student experience. Director of Marching and Athletic Bands professor Jon Waters supports students’ growth in areas beyond their musical talent, helping them develop and strengthen leadership, communication and time management skills.
Band members perform for more than the football team, proudly supporting the basketball, volleyball, soccer and hockey teams. Additionally, they perform at various events that bring community members together, including freshman convocation and Rally BG.
Since Arrington joined the band her freshman year, it has grown to become one of the nation's largest college bands. Of the band's record 425 members, 75% of the band consists of majors outside of music, exemplifying an inclusive environment and broad appeal to students across the learning community.
Arrington said she's proud to have seen the band grow to almost three times its original size and loves the community they've created.
"With the band's massive size, we're impossible to ignore," Arrington said. "It has made me so proud to be a member of this organization and part of something that so many people want to join in on."

As a four-year member of the Falcon Marching Band and a senior music education major, Arrington has become a leader in the band, holding the title of drum major for the second year.
"Joining the Falcon Marching Band created an instant community for me," she said. "We all support one another and share experiences at home football games, band showcases and the occasional trip."
The trip of a lifetime came earlier this year when the Falcon Marching Band traveled to Ireland to perform in the iconic St. Patrick's Day Parade in Dublin on March 17. One of only three college marching bands to perform in the parade, Arrington and others showcased their talents on a global stage, marching two miles through Ireland's capital city in front of half a million spectators.

The trip was absolutely life-changing, I brought home so many memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life. Not only did we experience Ireland, but we were chosen to represent BGSU overseas.
During their stay, students were able to tour the surrounding area, visit Blarney Castle, pop in and out of shops and cafes and create memories with friends.
"Being part of the Falcon Marching Band has helped me grow as a person, musician and future music educator," Arrington said. "I encourage anyone with a passion for marching band and an interest in being part of something bigger than yourself to join the FMB."
