Public invited to view healthcare diagnostics truck

BOWLING GREEN, O.—Bowling Green State University’s Medical Laboratory Science program is hosting the 80-foot long Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics truck on campus April 2-3.

The public and the University community are invited to see first-hand some of the high-tech equipment used in hospitals and medical labs to do various tests. The truck, which will be parked in Lot N near Jerome Library and Wolfe Center for the Arts, will be open to visitors from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on April 2 and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 3 Visitors are welcome to come as their schedules allow and to stay as long as they wish.

“You will be able to see what happens between the time your blood is drawn and when you have the results,” explained Rebecca Bertz, director of the BGSU’s Medical Laboratory Science program. “You can learn what happens in the middle – the rest of the story,” she added.

This is the first time the diagnostics truck has been to the area, and BGSU joins the company of University of Wisconsin, Georgia Tech and Florida State for hosting the truck at a university setting.

Visitors to the truck will be able to gain an understanding of the many clinical laboratory products Siemens develops that have a direct impact on patient diagnosis and treatment. The equipment on board handles a large variety of tests such as Vitamin D, pregnancy, cholesterol, glucose, illegal drugs, therapeutic drug levels, allergies, thyroid diseases, herpes, cancer tumor markers, hepatitis, HIV and blood clotting.

There also will be point-of-care instruments that are used near patients in clinics, emergency rooms and pharmacies that test for heart attacks, electrolyte levels, diabetes monitoring, kidney disease and blood clotting.

The Medical Laboratory Science program will have a table near the truck with information about the program plus some T-shirts and candy bars to give away.

The visit is sponsored by the Center of Excellence for Health and Wellness Across the Lifespan and the College of Health and Human Services.
