Sheila

Sheila Spradlin Reich ’87

credits BGSU for opening doors to the world

With a career in international banking that spans more than 20 years and numerous countries, Sheila Spradlin Reich ’87 has developed, managed and executed banking strategies for large corporate, international, treasury management, public funds, higher education, nonprofit financial institutions, private business and government entities. She is also currently
serving on the Leadership Council for the BGSU College of Business Administration.

She has led economic trade missions encouraging global trade and foreign investment in the Midwest. As managing director of International Banking at Huntington National Bank, her expertise is sought by business and financial leaders across the globe. However, it is her tie to Bowling Green State University that Spradlin Reich counts as the highlight of her career.

While serving as managing director of International Banking for Fifth Third Bank, Spradlin Reich traveled with Ohio’s then governor Robert Taft to Japan on a trade mission.

“We were at the United States ambassador’s residence in Tokyo,” she said. “It was all very formal and very serious as there was much at stake in securing international investment for the state of Ohio. I looked across the room and who did I see but Akiko Jones — the very woman who helped me launch my career in international banking.”

Spradlin Reich was in the first class of students taught by Akiko Jones at BGSU.

“Hands down, Akiko was the best teacher I ever had,” said Spradlin Reich. “Frankly, I was just taking the class because I wanted a job. Japanese investment was growing in the Midwest at the time, so I simply wanted to learn to speak Japanese for my future career.”

Instead, Jones brought Japanese culture to life for Spradlin Reich and her classmates. Spradlin Reich had only planned on taking an introductory Japanese course, but instead studied with Jones for three years and completed an internship arranged by Jones for her.

“This internship set the course for my career,” said Spradlin Reich. “I never would have risen through the ranks of international banking without the foundation provided by Akiko and BGSU.”

Paul HookerPaul Hooker ’75

teams up with BGSU student to launch nonprofit sports organization

In 1977, just two years after graduating from BGSU with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, Paul Hooker purchased the New York City-based luxury household linen importer SFERRA from the last of two Sferra family members who established the company in 1891. He took SFERRA from a one-room office on Fifth Avenue to a 35,000-square-foot distribution facility in Edison, N.J. and a showroom just off of Madison Square Park in Manhattan. In the process, Hooker grew annual sales from $250,000 when he bought the business in 1977 to more than $30 million. Today, SFERRA presents the most comprehensive range of luxury home textiles for the bed, bath and table worldwide.

In 1990 Hooker and his wife and Falcon Flame, Margo ’74, founded a nonprofit sports program for children with disabilities, Challenged Youth Sports.
Today, this program assists over 150 families throughout the Monmouth County, N.J., area.

In acknowledgement of BGSU’s importance to their lives, the couple made a $160,000 pledge in 2013 for scholarships in the University’s Alumni Laureate Scholars program.

Now, Hooker is also working with BGSU business student Luke Sims to take the sports program national by involving universities throughout the country. BGSU will serve as a prototype and put in motion Hooker’s dream of creating an environment of inclusion that fosters social integration, promotes healthy living and builds confidence through sports in communities throughout the nation.  The program has been renamed RallyCap Sports and was introduced in October at BGSU.

Kisma Jordan-Hunter ’06

makes her mark in the opera world

Sparking a music fan’s interest in classical music can be difficult when the listener’s tastes are more Beyonce than Beethoven.

But BGSU alum Kisma Jordan-Hunter ’06 is up to the task.
The 33-year-old vocalist will focus on exposing new audiences to opera, classical and other timeless music as a 2014 Kresge Fellow.

Jordan-Hunter, who earned a master’s degree from BGSU’s College of Musical Arts in 2006, was one of 18 Detroit-area artists selected in summer 2014 for the Kresge Foundation’s fellowship. The honor includes a $25,000 award that allows fellows to develop their creative visions, whether their goals include making films, producing musicals or creating art exhibits.

“I’m at a pivotal point in my career,” Jordan-Hunter said. “I’m a singer, but I don’t want to be confined to singing. I write music, I write songs... I have so many other ideas. I don’t want to wait until the end of my singing career to allow my creative mind to be free.”

Jordan-Hunter has performed with the New Mexico Philharmonic, the Hilton Head Symphony and the Omaha Symphony. The New York Times has described hers as a “shimmering soprano voice.”

As a Kresge fellow, Jordan-Hunter wants to bend and blur genres to expose younger audiences to opera and classical music, she said.
One of her proposed methods: making a “classical version” of the mix tape, a marketing tool that underground hip hop artists have used since the early 1980s to help their music find new listeners.

“Some people say opera is fading or dying out, but I think it’s a living, breathing art form,” Jordan-Hunter said. “Opera can adapt to the times, if we push ourselves to think outside the box.”

Another piece of her fellowship will include organizing a production celebrating “Negro spirituals.” This performance will blend slave-era African American gospel with dramatic narrative, monologue and original visual art. She hopes to include the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in the performance.

The Kresge fellowship is only the most recent in a list of Jordan-Hunter’s achievements. Previously, she has earned scholarships and awards from the Metropolitan Opera National Council, the Bel Canto Vocal Scholarship Fund, the Fritz and Lavinia Jensen Foundation and the National Association of Teachers of Singing.
Jordan-Hunter attributes her success to the musical mentors from her undergraduate years, spent at Kentucky State University, as well as her graduate study years at BGSU.

“BG has emerged as one of the leading music schools in the country,” she said. “I personally gained so much from the help of the faculty and the connections I made while I was a student.”

She returned to Bowling Green in September 2014 to perform at the University’s Annual Donor Recognition event.
