“I'm an NDTR working at Dietary Solutions, which is a consulting company that places nutrition consultants in clients' facilities. I currently work part-time in two long-term care facilities and a group home, while providing remote consulting when other consultants need support, and I'm taking on a remote position at new facility after graduation. After I gain RD credentials, I plan to go full time and take on the oversight of nutrition associates and NDTRs at their facilities. I also hope to precept for BGSU interns! Currently, my job incudes charting, interviews, and education for nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and group homes. I monitor kitchen safety, QAPI reports, tray and dining room audits, provide dietary intervention recommendations and advocate for residents to receive the most accurate and up-to-date interventions.”

Hallie Lapoint, MFN, DTR, RDE 2023-24 Distance Intern

Since graduating, I’ve been working as a Registered Dietitian at Mercy St. Vincent Hospital where I oversee the nutrition care of both inpatients and sometimes outpatients. My role involves performing nutritional assessments, managing orders for therapeutic diets and supplements, and providing nutrition education to patients and their families.

It’s been a great experience so far as St. V’s is the second largest hospital in Toledo, we have it all here, pediatric, and neonatal units, a burn unit, and multiple ICU’s.  I wanted to be able to get experience with a whole range of patients.

Kelsey Buckley, MFN, RDN, LD. 2023-24 Onsite Intern

"I received my Bachelor of Science in Dietetics from BGSU. I found the Food and Nutrition department faculty to be highly supportive and passionate about students’ success. The BGSU on-campus dietetic internship and master’s program were obvious choices for me. The fact that it has a health and wellness concentration was a bonus. I am interested in preventative health care and how nutrition plays a role in preventing many chronic diseases. The on-campus option also allowed me to earn some income as a graduate assistant. I worked with the campus nutrition clinic and diabetes prevention program. The master’s program allowed me to customize my program around my interest and career goals. I took master-level classes such as diabetes, weight management, and phytochemicals. As an intern, I could choose rotations that interested me, such as a youth diabetes camp, a clinic for pregnant women with gestational diabetes, and a psychiatric hospital. I got the experience of interacting with a very diverse population in many different settings. I built relationships with other dietitians and now have a strong network of colleagues. BGSU also helped me find my voice as a healthcare provider and gave me the confidence to use it."

Lisa Langhals, MFN, On-site Intern 2021-2022, Wellness Supervisor

“I enjoyed the program because of the endless support from my peers and staff members. I also enjoyed how my directors took into consideration what I want to do in the future and catered the rotations to reflect that. I also think the program is unique in that you get to professionally grow as a GA and receive a stipend. I appreciate all the friendships and connections I made at BG!”

Ashley Asencio, MFN, On-site Intern 2021-2022

“I am currently an outpatient dietitian at the Cleveland Clinic, it's hard to believe I have been here 3 years already! I work at the main campus where I spend a lot of time working with patients preparing to receive solid organ transplants and participate in the selection committee for liver and heart transplant. I also work at a local family health center providing general education for patients seeking weight loss and lifestyle changes as well as assisting with chronic disease management including kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, gastrointestinal issues and many more. This position encourages me to keep my clinical knowledge fresh since I work with such a vast variety of disease states, and I enjoy the variety. I am currently pursuing advanced practice in the area of malnutrition and am the primary investigator for a research project aiming to validate a tool for a nutrition-focused physical exam (NFPE) in a virtual setting. I also enjoy being involved with the media, you will find my expertise featured in many 'Cleveland Clinic Health Essentials' articles. Outpatient nutrition and counseling was my favorite part of my dietetic internship so when I was looking for something a little more challenging as I got further into my career, I was happy to find the position I have now. Prior to my current position, I spent several years working in long-term care.”
