Co-op Exceptions

**Non-Traditional E-Campus Students in Management and Technology (M&T) and Quality Systems (QS) programs should consult with their E-campus academic advisor regarding co-op exceptions.  

**All other College of Technology, Architecture and Applied Engineering (CTAAE) students should consult with their assigned Academic Advisor or the Office of Cooperative Education about co-op exceptions.

Students who earned an associate or bachelor’s degree BEFORE declaring a major in the College of Technology, Architecture and Applied Engineering (contingent on program requirements) from an approved and accredited institution MAY receive one (1) CO-OP course exception. 

A co-op course exception can only granted after final transcripts documenting the degree was earned are received and officially verified by BGSU’s Office of Registration & Records. Students should notify their academic advisor when they have submitted their final transcripts.

Students who complete basic military training may receive credit for one co-op course. Once completed, the student must submit documentation to BGSU’s Office of Registration and Records verifying they have completed basic military training.  Students should consult with Non-traditional  and Military services in conjunction with their academic advisor to ensure the substitution has been made.

Tech School and OJT periods vary, but must consist of at least 13 total weeks combination and must be directly related to student’s major. Example: Aircraft Maintenance for Aviation Studies. Once completed, the student must submit documentation to BGSU’s Office of Registration and Records verifying completion. Students should consult with Nontraditional and Military Student Services in conjunction with their academic advisor to ensure the substitution has been made.

Students may request consideration for a co-op exception (waiver) for ROTC Training. Note: Co-op exceptions in the form of a waiver do not generate credit hours. Students should review their graduation plan to account for waivers.

ROTC Field training programs may be used as one co-op exception (waiver). Once completed, the student must submit documentation in the form of an official letter or certificate signed by their commanding officer to coop@bgsu and cc' their academic advisor to request consideration for a co-op exception for ROTC Field training. If approved the students' academic advisor will process the exception.

*Highly competitive training programs for commissioning students may be considered for one co-op exception (waiver). Contact the Office of Cooperative Educaton directly for consideration. The student's department (Chair/Director) and Assistant Dean may be consulted. Documentation of completion of approved training in the form of an official letter or certificate signed by the student's commanding officer must be submitted to coop@bgsu to finalize all co-op exception requests. The students' academic advisor will be notified to process approved co-op exception accordingly.

Summer: 4-6 weeks

ROTC Field Training programs may be considered for one co-op course exception.   

For the traditional four year students, camp occurs before the junior year. However, if a student is a senior and plans on attending graduate school, they may attend camp during the summer prior to graduate program start date. If a student is a senior and is not planning on attending graduate school, their current academic program must be extended by two years.

Summer: ~7 weeks

Highly competitive training programs for commissioning students may be considered for one co-op course exception. A minimum of 7 weeks of education and training for Air Force officer career fields is required for consideration.

Advanced Camp Occurs between the students junior and senior year - Summer: 5 – 6 weeks

The Leadership Development and Assessment Course (LDAC) is the centerpiece of the US Army’s Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program.  It is conduced only during the summer months (June, July, and August) at Fort Lewis, WA. LDAC is normally attended by cadets between their junior and senior years of college although the last rotation consists of soldiers in the OCS (Officer Candidate School) program.

Highly competitive training programs for commissioning students may be considered for one co-op course exception.

The cadet Troop Leader Training (CTLT) provides cadets the opportunity to experience leadership in Army Table of Organization and Equipment (TO&E) units over a three to four week period. Cadets serve in lieutenant-level leadership positions in active-duty units. Platoon Leader positions have 3-4 week duration depending on the hosting unit and location. Assignments include units that are located CONUS and OCONUS. Cadets are assigned a unit mentor, and are provided on-post lodging and meals via a dining facility. This program is exclusively designed for MS III Cadets before and after completion of the Leader Development and Assessment Course (LDAC).

Highly competitive training programs for commissioning students may be considered for one co-op course exception.

Of the two 6 week classes, only one may be considered as a co-op exception.  

Platoon Leader Class (Junior or Senior) - The 10 week class may be considered for one co-op course exception.

Platoon Leaders Class (Combined): The Platoon Leaders Class is a physically and mentally challenging summer program leading to a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps. The training is conducted only during the summer. Freshman and sophomores attend two 6 week training sessions. Juniors and seniors and graduates attend a 10 week session. All training is conducted at Officer Candidates School (OJS), Quantico, Virginia.

If a College of Technology, Architecture and Applied Engineering student has work experience related to their field of study prior to entering the college, they may be eligible for Co-op Credit By Examination (CBE).

  • E-Campus students in the Management and Technology (M&T) and Quality Systems (QS) degree programs follow CBE procedures specific to their programs and must consult with the program advisor listed below.
    • Management and Technology students only consult: Program Advisor, Dr. Shelley Waltonen Moore, at swmoore@bgsu.edu
    • QS students only consult with Quality Systems Program Advisor, Dr. Chris Kluse at ckluse@bgsu.edu

**University CBE Requirements and CBE Required Documents details below still need to be followed to insure proper credit.

All other students in the College of Technology, Architecture and Applied Engineering (CTAAE) pursuing co-op credit by exam should follow the guidelines listed below and contact the co-op office coop@bgsu.edu.

CTAAE students must be able to answer “YES” to all questions listed below to qualify for Co-op CBE:

  1. Did your work experience occur after high school graduation.
  2. Did your work experience occur prior to entering the College of Technology, Architecture and Applied Engineering?
  3. Was/Is the work experience related to your major?
  4. Was the work experience full-time (working at least 40 hours per week) and continuous (with no breaks in between) for at least 12 months?
  5. Can you provide documentation of said employment?

If "YES" to all questions above consult with designated faculty member:

Before submitting required Co-op CBE documents, the student must consult with a designated faculty member from their major (via email, in person or by phone), to determine if their work experience is related to their major and applicable for Co-op CBE.

Co-op CBE approval takes approximately 5 weeks.

An $80 charge will be added to your Bursar account after the CBE documents are submitted.

  1. The student must be registered for two credit hours AND maintain the minimum registration level the entire semester in which they are pursuing CBE credit AND at least five weeks before the semester ends.
  2. Qualify for CBE per the student's specific program requirements.
  3. Provide CBE documentation as required by their specific program requirements, including documentation verifying work experience.
  4. Submit all Co-op CBE documents in unison to include employment documentation, CBE cover sheet, CBE report and CBE electronic application (see link below under Part B)

Part A and Part B listed below should be submitted IN UNISON and in the same semester (Please do not submit the CBE application before you are ready to submit other required CBE documents.

Part A: The following documents should be submitted: to coop@bgsu.edu from your BGSU email as one pdf file if possible.

1. Documentation of Previous Work Experience on company letterhead from the company(ies) you are using for your CBE experience that includes:

  • Verification of 12 month, fulltime, 40 hours/week experience, including dates of employment (which must be after high school graduation and before declaring a major in CTAAE.
  • Your title and description of your position.
  • Signed and dated by a human resource manager, supervisor or other appropriate person.

2. Recommendation/Evaluation of work performance from said employer, using one of the methods listed below:

  • Formal company performance evaluation for the 12 month period OR
  • letter(s) of reference (this can be incorporated as an additional paragraph in the verification of work experience letter as defined above) OR
  • Cooperative Education Performance Evaluation form (contact coop@bgsu.edu)

3. Cooperative Education Report (Download the CBE Report Template).   

  • Management and Technology Students: Consult with Dr. Shelley Waltonen Moore, at swmoore@bgsu.edu for the appropriate report template.
  • Quality Systems Students: Consult with with Dr. Chris Kluse ckluse@bgsu.edu for the appropriate report template.

Part B: The Credit by Exam Application Form.
