Can I succeed in college with ADHD?

Yes! Students with ADHD or other learning differences can absolutely succeed in college, especially with the right academic support. Most colleges and universities offer support through accessibility services, but Bowling Green State University takes it a step further.

BGSU is among a small number of universities nationwide with a dedicated academic support program for students with ADHD, learning differences and executive function challenges. The program is called FLY (Falcon Learning Your Way).

1 What is the FLY program at BGSU?

The FLY program is a specialized academic support initiative at BGSU designed to help students with ADHD, learning differences and executive function challenges thrive in college.

BGSU is a leader among public universities in Ohio and nationwide for providing one-on-one support for students with learning differences,” said FLY Program Director Travis Brown, Ph.D. “The dedicated support our students receive and the relationships they build are pivotal to their success.”

2 How does the FLY program support students?

Students in the FLY Program meet weekly with the same learning specialist, providing consistent support during their time at BGSU. Specialists help students:

  • Break down large tasks into manageable steps
  • Develop effective study and organizational strategies
  • Build confidence and self-advocacy skills

3 What outcomes do FLY participants experience?

BGSU student Maddie Burnham, a communication major with ADHD, says the FLY Program helped her reduce academic stress, manage her workload and stay on track.

Fellow student Taylor Gaies credits the program with achieving her strongest academic performance ever, saying the FLY Program helped turn long-standing challenges into strengths.

“I had the best academic year I’ve ever had in my life. I truly thrived,” she said. “I was successful in my classes and turned so many of my weaknesses into strengths. The FLY program has been the most transformational experience. I hold such a special place for it in my heart.
