University awarded designation for second consecutive time by Ohio Department of Higher Education

For the second time, Bowling Green State University has earned Collegiate Purple Star designation from the Ohio Department of Higher Education for its support of veteran and military-affiliated students.

BGSU was honored with renewed designation in part for the personalized assistance and resources it provides to veteran and military students, including through the Office of Nontraditional and Military Student Services and student-led organizations. Veteran and military student surveys were also considered for this year's designation, which was awarded by a committee appointed by ODHE Chancellor Mike Duffey.

In addition to statewide recognition, BGSU has also been consistently ranked by Military Times as the No. 1 university in the Midwest for veteran and military students for four consecutive years.

"We recognize the uniqueness of each student and the individual situations they face," Dr. Barbara Henry, assistant vice president of BGSU Nontraditional and Military Student Services, said of the ranking. "None of our students have exactly the same circumstances. Some of them might need assistance with studying, while others are receiving orders to report for active duty. Our comprehensive, personalized approach ensures that BGSU military-affiliated students have the support needed to succeed and thrive."

As the No. 1 public university in Ohio for student learning experiences and opportunities, BGSU empowers students to shape their education in and out of the classroom. Veteran and military-affiliated students at BGSU support their fellow servicemembers with tutoring and other services while exploring new ways to enhance their educational experience.

BGSU was first named a Collegiate Purple Star awardee in 2022 when Ohio became the first state in the nation to offer the designation for colleges and universities. Schools must apply for renewal after three years.
