Nursing Symposium

Clinical judgment is the ability of a nurse to make decisions for patients using evidence-based practice, knowledge, skills, experience, communication and reflection. Student nurses begin developing clinical judgment in nursing school and continue developing this essential skill after they become working nurses. But how do nurses continue to foster and enhance clinical judgement throughout their careers?

This virtual nursing symposium will present strategies and insights to maximize the development of clinical judgement. We will have experts in the field of nursing education and clinical judgment speaking as part of the symposium. Podium presentations will focus on clinical judgment in nursing, pre-licensure education, staff education, practicing nurses and leadership. Join us as we explore the newest trends in clinical judgment.

Keynote Speaker

Dr. Ann Nielsen, Ph.D., RN
Clinical Associate Professor, Oregon Health & Science University

Dr. Ann Nielsen has been on faculty at the Oregon Health & Science University, School of Nursing since 2001. Her clinical and teaching focus includes neonatal, pediatric, perinatal nursing care, health promotion and nursing leadership. Scholarship interests include curricular and clinical design, concept-based learning in the clinical environment, use of reflection in student learning, and educational assessment and evaluation. Practice interests include development of academic practice partnerships that further improvement in nursing education and patient care. Nielsen has made a significant contribution to nursing education regarding clinical judgment and reflective thinking.

Dr. Mary Ann Jessee, Ph.D., RN
Assistant Professor of Nursing, Assistant Dean for Academics, Generalist Nursing Practice, Vanderbilt University School of Nursing

Dr. Mary Ann Jessee joined the Vanderbilt University School of Nursing faculty in 2003 with a background in medical surgical and neurosurgical intensive care nursing practice. Her research focuses on how the learning environment, including the clinical environment and curricular implementation strategies, influences the development of clinical reasoning in pre-licensure nursing students. As the pre-specialty level director, she supports a learning environment that promotes student development of clinical reasoning through innovative and challenging learning experiences designed to develop the knowledge, skill and attitudes essential for the future of nursing practice.
