Finkeldey presents research findings at #ASC2015 in Washington, DC
Jessica Finkeldey, BGSU PhD student, attends American Society of Criminology (ASC) 2015 Annual Meeting in Washington, DC, November 18-21. Finkeldey, (with Peggy G. Giordano, Monica A. Longmore, & Wendy D. Manning) will present their research poster, Deviant Identity and Delinquent Behavior.
Eickmeyer finds decline in divorce rate
In her recent Family Profile, Divorce Rate in the U.S.: Geographic Variation, 2014, Kasey J. Eickmeyer, Graduate Research Assistant, finds the divorce rate has dropped 23% in the past 35 years -- the lowest since 1970.
Stykes, Cooper, & Pitt Earn Diplomas
Congratulations, Bart Stykes, PhD; Lindsay Cooper, MA; & Cassady Pitt, PhD. The trio received their diplomas during graduation ceremony marking the 100th anniversary of BGSU's first commencement.
Lamidi Receives Adamchak Award
Congratulations to Esther Lamidi, recipient of the 2015 Adamchak award. Established by Donald and Susan Adamchak (both who earned graduate degrees in sociology from BGSU), this award recognizes a graduate student's research excellence in demography.

Stykes Co-authors Series of Profiles
Doctoral student Bart Stykes, with co-authors Wendy D. Manning and Susan L. Brown, created a series of three Family Profiles focusing on grandparenthood. The profiles document the prevalence of grandparenthood and compare the sociodemographic composition of grandparents based on coresidence of grandchildren.

Stykes Published Paper Selected as "One of the Very Best" by Demographic Research
Congratulations to BGSU doctoral student J. Bart Stykes and Professors Wendy D. Manning, and Susan L. Brown whose paper, Nonresident Fathers and Formal Child Support: Evidence from the CPS, NSFG, and SIPP, has been selected as one of the very best published papers in Volume 29 of Demographic Research. The journal is competitive and rigorously peer-reviewed; only a few papers in each volume receive the "Editor's Choice" designation. The paper is marked with a star on the journal's website and included in the "Editor's Choice" collection.
Alvira-Hammond Article Appears in Child Trends
Doctoral student Marta Alivra-Hammond publishes a Child Trends report on immigrant children's well-being. Understanding the Risks to Children Crossing the Border stems from her work as a Summer Research Fellow for the National Center on Hispanic Children and Families.
Alvira-Hammond Receives 2014 Adamchak Award
Congratulations to BGSU doctoral student Marta Alvira-Hammond, recipient of the 2014 Donald J. and Susan E. Adamchak Graduate Student Award in Demography. The Adamchaks (former BGSU graduates in Sociology) established the award in 2003 to recognize a graduate student's research excellence in demography. Alvira- Hammond was recognized for her outstanding research paper, Fertility Differentials Across Race-Ethnicity and Generational Status: Incorporating Non-Hispanic Immigrants.
Alvira-Hammond recently presented her research poster, Adverse Childhood Experiences: Separate and Cumulative Effects on Adolescent Health and Well-Being, at the Population Association of America annual conference.
A Community of Engaged Scholars
Our graduate students are engaged sociologists, routinely receiving recognition for their contributions to their various research, teaching and service enterprises. For example, just in the past 5 years, we have had graduate students serve on the BGSU Board of Trustees, the BGSU HSRB Committee, and host BGSU/OSU Graduate Conferences on Population. They have also won many awards, including those external to our department, such as the Phi Kappa Phi Award, a PAA poster award, the BGSU Presidential Distinguished Service Award, and the BGSU Graduate Student Senate Outstanding International Student Award. And our graduate students are routinely finalists or winners of the Graduate Student Senate Charles E. Shanklin Award for Research Excellence. Our students represent the best sort of community of dedicated apprentice scholars.
Sociology Graduate Students Honored at 31st annual Shanklin Graduate Student Awards Ceremony
Marta Alvira-Hammond won the Winifred O. Stone Graduate Student Development Fund Award and was a nominee for the Distinguished Thesis Award. April Manalang won the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award an is a nominee for the 2012-2013 Distinguished Dissertation Award which will be selected this summer. Jessica Cohen won the 2011-2012 Distinguished Dissertation Award. Congratulations on you great efforts at teaching and research!
Elliasson-Nannini earns the 2012 Winifred O. Stone Graduate Student Development Award and Book Chapter appears in print
Janelle Elliasson-Nannini was selected as a recipient of this year's Winifred O. Stone Graduate Student Development Fund Award. This prestigious award promotes academic and professional growth among outstanding graduate students. She will receive her award at the Charles E. Shanklin and Graduate Student Senate Awards Ceremony later this Spring! Also, she appears in print this year with a graduate program alum in a published volume. Jannelle and Deirdre Sommerlad-Rogers have a chapter called "The Social Construction of Serial Murder Victims: A Multivariate Level Analysis" in the Harms of Crime and Media: Essays on the Perpetuation of Racism, Sexism and Class Stereotypes (2012), edited by Denise L. Bissler and Joan L. Conners. McFarland and Company, Inc.
Shaw earns the 2011 Golden Key Graduate Scholar Award and Winifred O. Stone Graduate Student Development Award
Unique Shaw was recognized multiple times this year, earning distinguished university and national honor awards.
Warner receives support from Katzner-University Bookstore Graduate Student Research and Professional Development Endowment
Tara Warner received competitive research support funds to enable her to present her research at this year’s ASA meeting in Las Vegas, NV.
