SETTING

In the mythical land of Arcadia, a place of love, rebellion, and rock-and-roll

Directors Note

Early in the first act, the Shepherd encounters the remnants of a theatre troupe and discovers a note claiming they “starved for lack of a serious message.” It’s a playful bit of self-awareness, an inside joke about the show’s spirited nature, yet it risks underselling what Head Over Heels truly is. In his 2018 New York Times review, Ben Brantley called the musical “consciously instructive” and “oddly earnest.” Seven years later, in a cultural landscape shaped by new legislative pressures and renewed debates over identity, those words resonate even more strongly.

Because this musical does carry a message. It celebrates love in its many forms. It honors queer expression, individuality, and the boldness of living authentically. And yes, joyfully and unapologetically, it embraces inclusivity. (Oh, the skidmarks on my heart!) In a political climate where many may feel discouraged from being their full selves, we need only look to younger generations to see what true belonging can look like. They show us that a rainbow’s brilliance comes from its many colors, and its shine only grows with its diversity.

And fortunately for us, KIDS GOT THE BEAT!

The region in which Bowling Green State University and its campuses are situated inhabit the Great Black Swamp and the Lower Great Lakes region. This land is the homeland of the Wyandot, Kickapoo, Miami, Potawatomi, Odawa and multiple other Indigenous tribal nations, present and past, who were forcibly removed to and from the area. We recognize these historical and contemporary ties in our efforts toward decolonizing history and thank the Indigenous individuals and communities who havebeen living and working on this land from time immemorial.
