Basics of Using the ML/BSSA

Catalog Search Tips

Cataloged materials held by BGSU Libraries, including scores and recordings, may be located by searching the online catalog. Music Library staff have prepared brief instructional guides for searching the catalog

Listening to Recordings

Recordings with call numbers that start with "Music" (such as "Music CD 10453" or "Music 12/33 1750Arch1751") are part of the College of Musical Arts circulating collection and may be checked out by BGSU students, faculty, and staff.  See our Circulation Policy for more details about which patrons may borrow which formats and for how long.

Recordings with call numbers that start simply with the format ("12/33," "10/33," or "CD") are part of the Bill Schurk Sound Archives and are for library use only. If you need a selection from a Sound Archives recording for a class presentation, see our Recording Policy.

To request any of these materials, simply jot down the call number and give it to the worker at the Music Library Service Desk.  He or she will pull it for you, and you may listen to it in the Listening Center (headphones are provided) or check it out.

How to Use the Listening Center

Using Books and Scores

Books or scores with a location designation in the online catalog of "Music Open Stacks" are located in the compact shelving on the south end of the third floor, with the exception of scores whose call numbers start with "ovsz," which are located in the oversize score collection adjacent to the third floor stairs and those whose call numbers start with "min," which are located on the miniature score collection immediately next to the stairwell door.  These materials circulate at the main circulation desk on the first floor.  See our Circulation Policy for more details about which patrons can borrow which formats and for how long.

Books with a location designation in the online catalog of "Music Reference" are located in the ML/BSSA reference section, immediately to the right of the Music Library Service Desk and are for use only in the Music Library.

Books or scores with a location designation in the online catalog of "Music Listening Center" are housed in the closed stacks and are for use only in the Music Library.  Request these materials by filling out a green card from the box at the Music Library Service Desk and giving it to the worker there.
