Library Research in Canvas

Many faculty members and students rely on the library’s Research Guides for reliable information when conducting research. In 2021 alone, Research Guides were viewed over 200,000 times! Now, the library makes this information even more accessible to faculty members and students by embedding Research Guides and library databases directly into Canvas.

Starting in the Spring of 2022, you will see a new navigation pane in Canvas: Library Research. This will give students direct access to either a Research Guide related to your course or a basic Research Guide that gives them access to library resources. How does this work? Librarians will match your course to an existing Research Guide using our system. If a matching Research Guide doesn’t exist, the basic library guide will be embedded.

What are the benefits to this system? Any updates to the Research Guide (including links, resources, etc.) will be made automatically, so there’s no need to update links in your course shell. Students will be able to interact with the Research Guide within Canvas. They won’t have to log in to an external site or remember the Research Guide URL.

Librarians will complete the guide matching soon, but it will take time. If you think you should have a subject or course guide available but don’t see one, contact your subject librarian. If you have questions, contact Laura Sheets, the Interim Library Instruction Coordinator: sheetsl@bgsu.edu.
