Leaves of Absence and Workers' Compensation

At Bowling Green State University, we value the health, well-being and community spirit of our faculty and staff. To help employees during times of need, BGSU offers programs and resources designed to provide support and flexibility.

Leave Bank Program

Bowling Green State University has a Leave Bank program that allows both faculty and staff to donate sick leave hours to a collective bank that can be used to aid fellow employees who, due to extreme circumstances, may have depleted their vacation and sick leave.

Leaves of Absence

Bowling Green State University understands the importance of the health and well-being of employees and their families. Should an employee find it necessary to take a leave to address serious health conditions for themselves or their eligible family members, the Family Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA) is available for those who qualify.

Parental Leave

As part of its efforts to foster a workplace in which professional success can be achieved while maintaining a quality personal and family life, the University supports employees and their families with leave opportunities for new parents.

Faculty should refer to the CBA for information regarding parental leave benefits.

Workers Compensation/ Employee Injuries

Bowling Green State University is committed to employee safety and provides clear support when workplace injuries occur. Through the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation and Sedgwick, employees receive coordinated care and guidance. Resources help employees report injuries, access medical treatment, and navigate the claims process, ensuring a responsive and supportive recovery experience.

Break time and nursing mothers

Under Section 7(r) of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division requires employers to provide reasonable break time for employees to express breast milk for their nursing child for up to one year after the child's birth.

Light Duty Work Program

The Light Duty Program at BGSU is designed to assist employees with staying at or returning to work. Light duty, if available, extends only for the time specified by the employee’s treating physician. This program is temporary and available as medical necessary. The program requires the collaboration between the University, the employee and their health care provider(s).

Pregnant Workers Fairness Act

The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA) aims to protect the rights of pregnant employees by requiring employers to provide reasonable accommodations to a qualified employee’s or applicant’s known limitations related to, affected by, or arising out of pregnancy, childbirth, and related medical conditions, unless the accommodation will cause undue hardship.
