Twenty students put on their thinking "Capstone"s during 2018 Poster Session

Sociology 4800 Capstone offers opportunities for students to integrate knowledge from previous sociology courses, develop research skills to answer sociological questions, understand and become engaged with the research process, and help envision advanced study and job opportunities after graduation. Near the end of the semester, students graphically present their research findings at local, regional, or national undergraduate research conferences.

We want to thank our students, faculty, and staff for contributing to the 2018 Capstone Research Poster Presentations. Special thanks go to Assistant Professor Kei Nomaguchi (Capstone Instructor) and Senior Lecturer & Director of Undergraduate Studies Margaret Weinberger who helped Dr. Nomaguchi organize the event.

This year, the "9th Annual STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) in the Park" joined with the Wood County Air Fair to explore STEM Zones, which provided a peek into the exciting STEM fields.

Several undergraduate students and Dr. Margaret Weinberger, senior lecturer and undergraduate director, conducted an unscientific study with participants to ensure that "everyone counts, including our four-legged creatures!

Congratulations to Samantha Nousak, sociology major, who won first place in the paper competition at the Northeast Ohio Undergraduate Sociology Symposium (NEOUSS). Dr. Kei Nomaguchi is her faculty mentor on the research. According to Margaret Weinberger, director of undergraduate studies, Sam's presentation was masterful!

Undergraduate students receive sociology scholarship awards

Three undergraduate students were recently honored for their exceptional academic achievements.

Adam Smith received the Penny and Howard Aldrich Student Scholarship and Emily Malloy and Liam Garrett received the Aida Tomeh Memorial Scholarship. Congratulations!

AKD inducts six undergraduate students, two graduate students

Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD), the International Sociology Honor Society, inducted six undergraduate students and two graduate students during the 2018 ceremony. AKD Vice President Melinda Messineo delivered the keynote address. The purpose of AKD is to acknowledge excellence in teaching, research, and study of sociology.

Sociology students volunteered at HOOVES for the 2018 MLK Jr. Day of Service

Kickoff for the MLK, Jr. Day of Service was held Monday, January 15, in the Bowen-Thompson Student Union, Lenhart Grand Ballroom & Community Partner Sites in Northwest Ohio. The MLK, Jr. Day of Service is an annual event that is open to all students, faculty, & staff at BGSU. The day of service engages over 800 volunteers and more than 45 community partners. In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr., volunteers serve on MLK, Jr. Day to make it “a day on, not a day off.” Photo on the left shows our undergraduate and graduate students working at HOOVES. The mission of HOOVES is to use rescue horses to heal, grow and empower our hero's of the past, present and future through experiential training exercises.
