SCHOLARLY PROJECT IN FOOD AND NUTRITION

If students choose the scholarly project, they will be required to enroll in FN 6900 for the completion of a scholarly project in Food and Nutrition. Students will enroll in FN 6900 for two consecutive academic semesters [offered with faculty approval fall and spring only]. Enrollment in excess of four hours is acceptable, but no more than four hours may be credited toward degree. FN 6900 can be taken as letter grade or as S/U. Prerequisite: FN 6260 or other research methods course or consent of instructor.

Students will be encouraged to take an elective focused on statistical analysis. Students should consider taking EDFI 6410 Statistics in Education or a reasonable substitute. Independent reading from the scientific literature is required to complete the project.

Students will identify a practice or research gap, conduct a literature review, and develop a project proposal. During the first semester, students will also submit the Institutional Review Board (IRB) application to the IRB Review Board at Bowling Green State University, if applicable to their project. The application MUST be approved before any recruitment or data collection activities can begin with human subjects. IRB approval may take 6-8 weeks. Students should be proactive to submit their application within a timely manner during the first semester.

Projects vary – students have completed research projects based on a small sample of cross sectional data, completed secondary data analysis, systematic reviews, quality improvement projects, or they have developed, implemented, and evaluated a nutrition education program. Students will need to work with faculty on their project proposal. Students will be required to have two readers for the scholarly project.

Students will work with the faculty mentors to develop a plan for the final deliverables. For example, students may format their report as a manuscript, evaluation report, or they may also be asked to prepare a poster that could be used for a future scholarly/conference poster presentation.Students will present their work to the graduate faculty, FN faculty members, and their peers at a scheduled date typically during the Fall or Spring semester. eCampus students may complete this presentation via Zoom or on campus.

Students should consult the MFN graduate handbook for a review of all policies. When you are ready to enroll in FN 6900, please consult the Graduate Program Coordinator.
