PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

ADVISING

Faculty and professional advisors are committed to helping all students succeed. Students in the graduate program receive advising from the graduate coordinator and food and nutrition faculty.

TIME TO DEGREE

The MFN degree can be completed on a part time or full time basis with multiple start dates throughout the year. The program can be completed on campus or 100% online via our eCampus program. Full time students can complete the 31 credit hour program in 1.5 academic years.

FLEXIBILITY

Many of our eCampus students are post-traditional and they often balance work, personal commitments, while pursuing their graduate degree. The eCampus format allows for part time or full time enrollment. Students can start or resume classes throughout the year. Core courses are 15-weeks and electives are 7-weeks.

STAND OUT

Stand out with electives like Sports Nutrition, Weight Management, Applied Sensory Research, Phytochemicals, or Special Topics in Food and Nutrition. Recent topics have focused on nutrition leadership/entrepreneuriship, diabetes, nutrition communication, food allergies, and eating disorders. Students can also explore electives outside food and nutrition based on their professional needs and interests. BGSU offers many complimentary programs, like business, or health services administration, which students may find beneficial for their professional goals. Students can also combine their MFN with another graduate certificate in a complimentary discipline.

On campus students may also pursue a Dual Degree with the School of Human Movement, Sport, and Leisure Studies. This is a great fit for students interested in pursuing Sports Nutrition. This pathway will result in earning two graduate degrees - the MFN degree and the Masters of Education in Human Movement, Sport, and Leisure Studies. Students interested in this option should contact the program coordinator of each program for more information.

SERVICES, RESOURCES, AND COLLABORATION

The Graduate program is housed in the Health and Human Services Building. Opportunities are available for students to interact and conduct research with professionals in the field and related disciplines and professionals working in community/public/clinical nutrition and the food industry. Students have also interacted with community agencies through partnership grants awarded to faculty.

Students gain experience through community based learning and they can gain experience in the BGSU Nutrition Clinic, The BGSU Falcon Food Pantry, and through the Consumer and Sensory Research Lab. These experiences are available to on campus and eCampus students.

AFFORDABILTY

The streamlined curriculum of the MFN degree provides students with what they need to advance their knowledge and practice without adding costs to your degree. As of Spring 2023, the instructional cost per credit hour was $467.60 (this does not include fees). The eCampus program is affordable for in state and out of state residents. You can find more details about estimating costs by using the Graduate Calculator. This calculator can only be used to estimate attendance costs by semester.

TEACHING EXCELLENCE

Faculty are nationally known for their individual areas of expertise. Faculty are engaged with the Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE) and continue to update course curricula, pedagogy, and instructional tools to meet the demands of today’s learners. Faculty have been recognized for their teaching and service excellence at BGSU and externally within their professional organizations.

FOCUS ON OUTCOMES

According to a survey of recent graduates of the MFN and dietetic internship – 100% of graduates from 2020-2022 were employed in the field of nutrition or dietetics within 12 months of graduation. From 2020-2022, the one-year pass rate for the Registered Dietitian credentialing examination was 85% (exceeding our goal of a one-year pass rate of 80%). A 2021 alumni survey indicated that 100% of respondents (n = 18) were satisfied with the MFN degree and their current position.
