Typical Timeline of Study

Ph.D. in Media & Communication

  Milestones Credit Hours (Minimum)
Year 1
  • Temporary advisor: The Graduate Coordinator
  • Qualifying examinations (second semester)
  • After passing the qualifying exams, declare the permanent advisor by filing the “Advisor Change Form” and, in consultation with the advisor, compile a “Tentative Degree Program Form” detailing the doctoral coursework.
  • Fall: 9 course credit hrs + Colloquium
  • Spring: 9 course credit hrs + Colloquium
Year 2
  • Composition of the dissertation committee.
  • Summer: 6 course credit hrs
  • Fall: 9 course credit hrs + Colloquium
  • Spring: 9 course credit hrs + Colloquium
Year 3
  • Completion of required coursework by the end of summer
  • Application for Preliminary exam (May 15th for summer/Sept. 15th for fall/Feb. 15th for spring)
  • Completion of preliminary exams
  • Successful defense of dissertation proposal
  • Summer: 6 course credit hrs
  • Fall: 4 dissertation hrs + Colloquium
  • Spring: 4 dissertation hrs + Colloquium
Year 4
  • Completion of dissertation
  • Application for graduation
  • Summer: 1 dissertation hr
  • Fall: 4 dissertation hrs + Colloquium

Graduate Communication Association (GCA)
Upon enrollment, all active SMC graduate students automatically become members of GCA. GCA is the only official student organization in SMC and is registered with the Division of Student Affairs. The leadership is comprised of one President, one Vice-President, one Treasurer and one Secretary. GCA works closely with the Director and the Graduate Coordinator to serve as an official channel of communication between the SMC Graduate Faculty and graduate student body. GCA organizes its annual conference and professional development workshops.
