WHAT I DO

Dr. Gao is the Program Coordinator of the online master’s program in Instructional Design & Technology. She teaches courses in the areas of instructional design and technology such as IDT 6010 Principles of Learning Design, IDT 6700 Principles of Multimedia Production and Courseware Design, IDT 6720 Digital Game Based Learning, and IDT 6740 Digital Learning Theories.

RESEARCH INTERESTS

Dr. Gao’s research is focused on how to make learning more efficient, effective, and engaging with emerging technologies. She studies how to design technology-mediated environments that are conducive to self-regulated learning and explores pedagogical methods that promote deep and sustained learning in such environments. Her work has been published in top peer-reviewed journals in the field, such as the Internet and Higher Education, British Journal of Educational Technology, and Computers and Education. She is associate editor of Online Learning Journal, and editorial board member of The Internet and Higher Education. She also serves as PI on NSF’s Cultivating Learners' Autonomy to Improve Math Skills for STEM Learning (CLAIM-STEM) project (2022-2025).
