The Department of Psychology offers programs leading to the degrees of Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy.  All of the program areas are research oriented. The Clinical and Industrial/Organizational Programs provide training in applied areas in addition to research.

Ph.D. in Psychology with specialization in Clinical Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, or Cognitive & Neural Sciences

M.A. in Psychology with specialization in Clinical Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, or Cognitive & Neural Sciences (on the way to receiving a Ph.D. degree)

Students are only admitted to a Ph.D. program areas in psychology. Graduate students earn the M.A. as a component of the Ph.D. program.

Program Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the doctoral degree, students in the Psychology program are expected to be able to:

  • Achieve competencies in graduate level statistical methods.
  • Achieve competencies in graduate level psychological research methods.
  • Achieve competencies that reflect the breadth of psychology.
  • Achieve competencies in program specific/core knowledge areas.
  • Acquire direct experience in teaching.
  • Acquire direct experience in mentored research.
  • Design, implement, evaluate, and summarize the results of at least two independently conceived research projects.
  • Develop professional relationships and roles outside of the classroom.
  • Acquire skills in dissemination of research findings to the scientific community.

Accreditation
Our doctoral program in clinical psychology has been continuously accredited by the American Psychological Association since 1971.

Prerequisites to Graduate Work
It is recommended that applicants should have taken undergraduate psychology courses and at least one course in statistics.  Credit in a related field or pertinent experience count toward this minimum if approved by the department.

Admission Procedure
Applicants seeking admission to the graduate programs in Psychology should follow the instructions outlined in the Graduate Admission webpage. A complete application (application, letters of recommendation, personal statement, transcripts, test scores, resume/vitae) must be received by the following application deadlines: December 1 for Clinical and Industrial/Organizational Psychology, January 1 for Cognitive & Neural Sciences and Developmental Psychology.

Degree Requirements

Master of Arts
Candidates must complete a minimum of 30 semester hours of graduate credit.  Students are required to take a department approved methodology course (e.g. PSYC 6280 – Clinical Research Methods; PSYC 7800 – I/O Research Methods; PSYC 6870 – Research Methods) and at least two statistical courses (PSYC 6670 and PSYC 6680).

Doctor of Philosophy
Candidates must complete a minimum of 60 semester hours beyond the masters or 90 semester hours beyond the baccalaureate.  Students specializing in clinical psychology are required to complete a full-time, one year clinical internship at a remote site.   In addition to coursework and applied experience (for Clinical and Industrial/Organizational students), the M.A. thesis, preliminary research project or exam, and the dissertation are central to the student’s plan of study.  The individual plan of study for each student is developed in collaboration with the student’s sponsor and other involved faculty such as program area coordinators and the psychology graduate coordinator.   For more detailed information about courses, research, and degree requirements, please consult the psychology department webpage and graduate handbook.
