Amy DuBois Barnett

  • Position: Former editor-in-chief, Ebony, Executive Editor, ESPN

An award-winning media executive and brand architect, Amy DuBois Barnett is of one of our nation's premier curators of American popular culture. Her vision has shaped the pages of Harper's BazaarEssenceTeen PeopleHoney magazine, and Ebony—the oldest and largest black magazine in the country where she was formerly editor-in-chief.

An award-winning media executive, brand architect and currently the Executive Editor at ESPN, Amy DuBois Barnett is of one of our nation's premier curators of American popular culture. Her vision has shaped the pages of Harper's Bazaar, Essence, Teen People, Honey magazine, and Ebony - the oldest and largest black magazine in the country where she was editor-in-chief until 2014. At Ebony, Barnett executed the publication's first top-to-bottom redesign in its 66-year history to critical acclaim. She also introduced key new editorial franchises, such as the Ebony Beauty Awards and the "Black Wealth" and "50 Finest" issues, as well as groundbreaking editorial packages, such as "Multiracial in America," "Can We Save Detroit," "Black Men in America," and "Election 2012."

Under her leadership, Ebony grew its base by 11 percent in 2011, was listed as one of Ad Age's 25 fastest growing magazines in the country based on circulation, and won a record-breaking eight Salute to Excellence Awards from the National Association of Black Journalists in 2012. Ad Age also listed Ebony as a "2012 magazine brand to watch" and MinOnline listed Ebony as one of the top five advertising gainers in the industry for its June 2012 issue. Barnett was named the "2012 media executive of the year" by Target Market News.

An Adjunct Professor of Management and Organizations for Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management, Barnett teaches a course on media and entertainment. She has also appeared weekly as an on-air correspondent for CNN's American Morning and has been featured on many national television shows including The Today Show, Good Morning America, The Early Show, Nightline, and on various programs on VH1, MTV, and BET.

For her pioneering work as a journalist, style expert, and writer, Barnett received the Trailblazer Award from the New York Association of Black Journalists, an Aldo Award for fashion journalism from the Fashion Association, and a Hurston/Wright Award for creative writing. She is on the board of the American Society of Magazine Editors and is a member of the Fashion Committee of the School of the Arts Institute in Chicago.

From race relations and female empowerment to business leadership and branding, Amy DuBois Barnett speaks on a wide range of pertinent topics perfectly suited to college and corporate events.

Pamela K.M. Beall '84

  • Position: Director and president, MPLX, senior vice president, corporate planning, government and public affairs, Marathon Petroleum Corporation

Ms. Beall is director and president, MPLX, senior vice president, corporate planning, government and public affairs of Marathon Petroleum Corporation. She is also the president and a member of the board of directors of MPLX LP. Beall serves on the board of trustees of The University of Findlay and is a member of The Ohio Society of CPAs.

She began her career with Marathon in 1978 as an auditor and held positions with the Corporate Risk and Environmental Affairs and Domestic Funds organizations before transferring to USX Corporation as general manager, Treasury Services in 1985. She also held senior financial positions at NationsRent, Inc. and OHM Corporation, and served on the boards of directors of System One Services, Inc. and Boyle Engineering.

Ms. Beall rejoined Marathon in 2002, as manager, Business Development for Marathon Ashland Petroleum. She was named director, Corporate Affairs in 2003 and appointed director, Business Development in 2005. She then served as organizational vice president, Business Development - Downstream for Marathon Petroleum Company in 2006. Ms. Beall was named vice president of Global Procurement for Marathon Oil Company in 2007, vice president of Products, Supply & Optimization for Marathon Petroleum Company in 2010 and vice president, Investor Relations and Government & Public Affairs in 2011. She assumed her current positions with Marathon Petroleum Corporation and MPLX GP LLC in 2014. 

Ms. Beall graduated from The University of Findlay with a bachelor's degree in accounting in 1978. In 1984, she received her master's degree in business administration from Bowling Green State University. Ms. Beall was licensed as a certified public accountant in Ohio in 1984.

Jan Heppe '74

  • Position: President of the Americas, Burberry

Jan Heppe is president of the Americas for Burberry. In this role, Jan is responsible for driving the strategy, operations, and growth of Burberry across the region which includes the United States, Canada, Central and Latin America.

Since joining Burberry in 2001, Jan has been instrumental in developing the Americas business with a focus on integrating digital, growing the beauty business, developing luxury travel retail and unlocking the potential of emerging high-growth markets in Latin America. As a result, Burberry continues to deliver significant growth in the region, which today represents twenty-five percent of Burberry’s global revenue.

Prior to becoming President Americas, Jan served as Chief Operating Officer from 2010 to 2013, and prior to that, Senior Vice President of Stores. Before joining Burberry, Jan was Senior Vice President and Director of Stores for Loehmanns Inc., and Senior Vice President General Manager at John Wanamaker Department Store.

Jan is an alumna of Bowling Green State University.

Maribeth S. Rahe '70

  • Position: President & CEO, Fort Washington Investment Advisors, Inc.

Maribeth S. Rahe is president and chief executive officer of Fort Washington Investment Advisors, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Western & Southern Financial Group, based in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Under Rahe’s leadership, Fort Washington is one of the largest investment advisors in Ohio.* Fort Washington provides professional and comprehensive asset management services for institutions, corporations, insurance companies, mutual funds, foundations, associations and high-net-worth individuals.

Prior to joining Fort Washington, Rahe was president and a board member of the United States Trust Company of New York. Additionally, she also has served as vice chair of the board of The Harris Bank in Chicago and has held various positions at JPMorgan in London and New York. A native of Chicago, Rahe is a graduate of Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. She was also a Ph.D. candidate at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, and earned her Masters of Business Administration in International Management with honors from Thunderbird School of Global Management  in Glendale, Arizona.

Rahe serves on several regional and national boards of directors, including Cincinnati Arts Association, vice chair; Consolidated Communications Holdings, Inc.; Cincinnati Country Club, United Way Investment Committee; Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur Development Advisory Board; Xavier University Williams College of Business Board of Executive Advisors; Cincy Tech Advisory Board; Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber of Commerce; and First Financial Bancorp and First Financial Bank, N.A. She also serves on the Executive Committee of The Cincinnati Women's Executive Forum and is former president of The Women's Capital Club.  She’s also a member of The Commonwealth Club.  She is a life trustee to Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center; New York Landmarks Conservancy, and National Tropical Botanical Garden.  She is also the current president & treasurer of the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber Foundation.

A well-known and acknowledged expert in financial services, Rahe was featured in Vanity Fair magazine as one of “America’s Most Influential Women-200 Legends, Leaders and Trailblazers.”


Attendees of the 3rd annual Women in Business Leadership event, hosted by the BGSU Schmidthorst College of Business, had the opportunity to hear from and network with successful women business leaders. The theme this year was “Designing Your Career.”

The keynote speaker was Amy DuBois Barnett, executive editor at ESPN and former editor-in-chief at Ebony Magazine. DuBois Barnett spoke about her life growing up with a successful mother who instilled success in her from the very beginning. She used her mother’s example of independence and confidence and how she applies that to her life today.
