Service Beyond the Classroom: Business Student Honored by U.S. Air Force
Curtis Lydy is earning national recognition for leadership and discipline forged through military service
Curtis Lydy, a student specializing in supply chain management in Bowling Green State University’s Schmidthorst College of Business, was recently recognized for his service in the United States Air Force. Lydy earned the Air and Space Achievement Medal for his role during Operation Noble Eagle and was named the 2025 180th Fighter Wing Munitions Airman of the Year.
“These recognitions are a direct reflection of the incredible mentorship I’ve received,” Lydy said. “I’m grateful to serve alongside leaders who set the standard every day.”
During Operation Noble Eagle, Lydy supported homeland defense operations by assembling, inspecting and delivering aircraft countermeasures and precision-guided munitions for F-16 sorties flown in direct support of the president of the United States. He also contributed to multiple National Special Security Events, including the funeral of President Jimmy Carter, the presidential inauguration, Super Bowl 59, the Daytona 500 and the NCAA College Football National Championship.
While mobilized, Lydy was responsible for transporting $440 million in explosives, ensuring safety and accountability while enabling uninterrupted mission execution.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve, for the trust placed in me and for my teammates who make mission success possible every day,” he said.
Lydy said he joined the Air Force to prepare for his future and to be part of something bigger than himself. “There’s very little margin for error in what we do,” he said. “Being in situations where people rely on you forces you to grow quickly.”
Since enlisting during high school, Lydy has developed confidence and leadership skills while learning to manage high-pressure situations. “By trusting my training and gaining experience over time, what once felt overwhelming is now something I can handle calmly and confidently,” he said.
While honored by the awards, Lydy emphasized that the recognition reflects the team around him. “I don’t see it as a reflection of just me, but of the professionals I work alongside every day,” he said. “It truly takes the entire team to make the mission happen.”
