Johnson named director of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships

After a national search, BGSU has selected an experienced professional as the director of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships. Dr. Betsy Johnson will join the University on Feb. 16, announced Cecilia Castellano, vice provost for strategic enrollment planning.

Johnson is currently the vice president for enrollment management, student services and marketing at Owens Community College, where she has held positions of increasing responsibility since 2002. Prior to that role, she served for 10 years as the director of Owens’ financial aid office. She also brings a depth of knowledge regarding the ever-changing state and federal requirements, adapting policies and procedures to help students continue on through graduation, Castellano said.

Johnson has been professionally active on the federal and state levels, serving on Ohio Board of Regents consultation groups and participating in Ohio Chief Student Affairs Officers meetings, as well as holding leadership roles with the Ohio Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators. Since 2005, she has served as a Standards of Excellence Peer Reviewer for the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators.

She earned a doctorate in higher education administration from the University of Toledo, a master’s degree in college student personnel from Ohio University, and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Clarion University.

“Betsy Johnson has shown a commitment to student service and to engagement with academic and administrative colleagues throughout her career that speaks of her professional and personal leadership,” Castellano said. “I look forward to working with her and to her contributions to the success of BGSU students.”
