Qualifications/Preferred Skills: 

Required Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; enrollment in a related graduate program required.  
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.  
  • Organizational skills with the ability to multi-task.
  • Experience working and communicating with diverse groups of people.
  • Computer skills – Excel, Word, Publisher, PowerPoint, OneDrive, SharePoint, Google Drive.
  • Ability to act professionally and keep students’ records confidential in accordance with University, MAC, and NCAA policies.
  • Ability to make decisions and handle conflicts.
  • Critical thinking skills and creativity.

Preferred Skills:

  • Previous experience within NCAA athletics.
  • Proficiency with Teamworks or comparable systems.
  • Supervision and management skills.
  • Experience with student programming.
  • Ability to connect students with resources on campus.

Position Description:  The Office of Student-Athlete Services (SAS) strives to develop our student-athletes holistically through five Commitment Areas (Academic Excellence, Personal Development, Professional Development, Civic Engagement, and Life Design) by providing resources & customized programming to enhance the student-athlete experience. As an SAS graduate assistant, you will join an energetic team of full-time and part-time staff members to build and enhance a robust student-success program that will lead to positive student engagement. 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Provide responsive and professional customer service to coaches, staff, prospective student-athletes, current student-athletes, and campus partners regarding NCAA and MAC academic matters.
  • Conduct weekly meetings with first-year and at-risk student-athletes. Tracking academic performance data, including class participation, class attendance, and completion of required academic activities.
  • Provide consistent feedback to student-athletes regarding academic standing, course performance, and improvement strategies. 
  • Monitor athletic study hall, ensuring adherence to policites and promoting productive study environments.
  • Maintain academic data on assigned sports.
  • Assist in preparing NCAA Eligibility Progress-Towards-Degree Completion forms.
  • Prepare transfer evaluations for prospective incoming transfer students.
  • Support student-athletes during course registration each semester.
  • Contribute to orientation programs for incoming student-athletes to promote a smooth academic and social transition.
  • Maintaining and harnessing your passion for student-athlete development (academic, personal, professional, civic engagement, and Life Design).
  • Support student-athletes’ participation in career development opportunities, such as resume workshops, networking events, and advising appointments.
  • Assist with programming that builds resilience, identity development, decision-making skills, and confidence beyond athletics.
  • Plan and execute various student-athlete programs (student-athlete development and community engagement) and events throughout the academic year.
  • Refer student-athletes to appropriate campus resources (e.g., counseling, disability services, career center, wellness services).
  • Communicate regularly and report to the Associate AD/SAS, SAS Advisors, coaching staff members, student-athletes, college advisors, and various support staff members across campus

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Meet with prospective student-athletes and their families during official and unofficial visits to discuss academic support services.
  • Assist with the coordination of textbook distribution and collection each term.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of NCAA rules related to initial eligibility and continuing eligibility.
  • Serve as an active member of the BGSU Eligibility Team.
  • May have exposure to other areas of the athletics department (i.e. Game Operations, Development) based on need.

Time Commitment:

  • 20 hours a week.  Includes evening and weekend responsibilities (i.e.: recruiting visits, orientation, athletic events, civic engagement)
