Program Offered
The Master of Education in Teacher Education is a 15-month program designed to prepare person’s possessing a bachelor’s degree with a major (or equivalent) or minor (or equivalent) in an appropriate content area to qualify for initial teacher licensure in the State of Ohio. Certification specializations include: Mathematics – grades 7-12; Science – grades 7-12 (chemistry, earth sciences, integrated sciences, life sciences, physics); and World Languages – grades K-12 (Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Russian, Spanish).

Program Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the Master's degree, students in the Teacher Education program are expected to be able to:

  • Apply theories of human development and learning to teaching through the development of lessons and units of instruction
  • Exhibit professional and ethical behavior when working with students, their parents, other educators and community members
  • Analyze research from the classroom
  • Adapt and initiate current technology for the classroom

Accreditation
The teacher education programs in the School of Teaching and Learning are accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Educators (NCATE) with a move toward the new process under the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP)  http://caepnet.org/.

Prerequisites for Graduate Work
Prerequisites for the M.Ed. programs include a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.

Admission Procedure
Applicants seeking admission to the graduate programs offered by the School of Teaching and Learning should follow the instructions outlined in the Graduate Admission section of this catalog. In addition, review the following:

1. A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with a major or equivalent, or a minor or equivalent, in the appropriate content area. These include biology, chemistry, mathematics, Chinese, French, geology, German, Italian, Japanese, Latin, physics, Russian or Spanish.

2. Minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale with a minimum GPA of 3.0 or better in the major/minor content area for which the applicant is seeking licensure.

3. An official transcript from all colleges/universities attended.

4. Three letters of recommendation, including one from a person familiar with the applicant’s academic ability.

5. Must submit a “Good Moral Character” form.

6. Applicants are required to submit scores from the

  • Ohio Assessments for Educators (OAE) test (in the preferred content area: Math or Science– grades 7-12 teaching license) or
  • The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Oral Proficiency Interview and Writing Proficiency Test (foreign language license candidates) (test results -must be from test taken within two (2) years of graduate school application)
  • TOEFL or IELTS International applicants whose native language is not English are required to submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
