Faculty Research Committee

PURPOSE:

To advise the Vice President for Research and Economic Engagement and to recommend distribution of funds for faculty.

FUNCTIONS:

  1. Advise the Vice President for Research and Economic Engagement on all matters related to University research;
  2. Advise the Director of Sponsored Programs and Research on all matters related to university research;
  3. Receive or originate suggestions for the advancement of research, study fully such proposals and make recommendations to the Vice Provost for Research and Dean of the Graduate College;;
  4. Periodically review and make recommendations regarding the distribution of funds for faculty research;and,
  5. Otherwise encourage and support University faculty in their scholarly endeavors.

MEMBERSHIP:

  • Ten elected faculty members, three of whom are not members of Faculty Senate, shall be elected for three-year terms. Membership must include one each from the College of Arts and Sciences (Sciences and Mathematics division), the College of Arts and Sciences (Social Sciences division), the College of Arts and Sciences, Humanities division, the College of Business, the College of Education and Human Development, Firelands College, the College of Health and Human Services, the College of Musical Arts, the College of Technology and, from Instructional Support;
  • One additional faculty member in first four years, appointed by the Committee on Committees for a one-year term.

EX OFFICIO:

  • Vice President for Research and Economic Engagement or a faculty designee
  • Director, Sponsored Programs and Research, who will serve as executive secretary or his/her designee
  • Vice Provost for Academic Programs or a faculty designee

CHAIR:

The chair shall be a current or newly elected or appointed member of the committee, excluding ex officio members..

BALANCE OF REPRESENTATION:

At least one elected member must be from the graduate faculty. Three of the elected faculty members must be eligible for election to Faculty Senate ( Academic Charter, Article V.B).

VOTING RIGHTS:

All elected, appointed and ex officio members have full voting rights. If a committee member has submitted a proposal to the FRD, that committee member should recuse him or herself from discussion of and voting on his or her own proposal.  Consultants are non-voting members. ( Academic Charter, Article V.B)

QUORUM:

A quorum is a majority (50 percent plus one) of all voting members.
